I wonder why they didn’t just ask Klaus or Rebecca to compel Elana’s humanity back.

In general I agree with you about the memory thing as a cop out, but in this case I don't think it applies, since Bonnie's actions since 4x14 were her being brainwashed and not her own actions. So it makes sense why the witches trying to remove Silas and Expression would mess up the memories of what Silas made her do. Also, in regards to Caroline.. I lowkey hate that the show (and the fans) make it seem like Caroline saving Bonnie is in any way similar to the horrible things Klaus (and Stefan and Damon..) have done. She killed 12 witches who were about to kill her best friend and the only way to save her was to kill them. She didn't take any joy in inflicting pain and causing death like the others have.

Hmmm...photo or footage of said dog attempting to sleep in said box so we can all say...'That's so cute'

I agree that what Caroline did was nowhere near the same level of horrible as the things Klaus has done, but it was still horrible. I also agree with Klaus that 12 is more than one, and you also have to consider the fact that the only reason the witches were there was because Bonnie (under Silas's brainwashing) lured them there for the sacrifice, so the witches were kind of acting in self defense. It's very similar to the situation where Jeremy and Elena killed Kol. At the moment it happened, you could make a very good argument that they were acting in self defense, but they had set up the situation. If a person has deliberately manipulated a situation to get someone to try to kill them, anyone killing the "attacker" is on shaky ground when they claim they only killed them in self defense or defense of someone they love.

Lexie is just a good person who values human life. The fact that she’s older and stronger than Stefan means she knew she could keep Stefan from murdering more people. Instead of walking away, she took it upon herself to save Stefan. If you think about it, most vamps turn their emotions off because they would rather be numb than feel. This means they may have just been deeply hurt and maybe deserve a chance to return to themselves.

One interesting thing I realized after several rewatches is the brilliant writing in this show. If you remember, when Lexi asked Damon why he flipped his switch, he said "the 50s bored me", fastforward to Season 5, when Damon talks about his time in Augustine, where he had to flip his switch to leave Enzo... in 1958
