Interesting thing about Kercheval’s passing is how it was announced. It pretty much sounds like a plot line worthy of a Dallas episode! But a bit fascinating to follow in terms of what passes for internet/social media journalism and such. First on Sunday, several Dallas fan social media accounts were alerted of his passing in an Indiana nursing facility from people close to him, and the town’s local-local paper, with no social media presence ran his obit. Rather absurdly fans on FB and Twitter reacted in a “I wish this was untrue and will go out of my way to prove it, no matter the illogicality of my premise” sort of way. Mostly from the silence about it from major outlets. But the most bizarre one was posting a satire site that you will get if you do a Google search “[celeb’s name] death” that claims the celeb you searched was the victim of a hoax. Never mind everything about the page the “article” was on screams you, the reader, are being punked for feeding the click bait, “we need views count visibility over accuracy” “newz!~” culture of online journalism, but it didn’t tip anyone off that there was nothing of actual substance in the text! *rolls eyes* Anyway, by late Sunday Kercheval’s son contacted the fan site to say that Kercheval had not passed on, and the actor’s FB account, which hadn’t been active since 2013 (he himself hadn’t been acting since about 2015) with a quip referencing his Dallas’ character’s never ending feud with JR Ewing. Turns out that was a bit shady, in terms of trying to keep things on the down low publicly. Family just wasn’t ready to announce the passing, but for whatever reason the newspaper jumped the gun, despite the family’s wishes that they’d wait on it.
