I've been there before, you don't need special permission to go, just a visa on arrival. It was very easy to obtain via train from Çhisinąu (Moldova) to Tiraspol (Transnistria). People there were incredibly welcoming, but then again they don't see kiwis that often! I was told they only get around 200 tourists a year through their tourist centre, that was back in 2017. The students I met and drank with there were all very well educated about the world and their little slither of land they lived in, was very surprising in a way because it was like travelling back to the 1980s in the USSR with all the busts and statues of Lenin, Stalin, the old Soviet uniforms, the military parades etc.
