i can’t decide which aspect of this story is more concerning: the existence of psycho nazis like this guy, or the state-driven brown scare.

Your guest went relatively quick over the background of his involvement in 'Vlaams Belang' which is technically a mainstream political party who holds the second largest share of the vote in Flanders. It is currently projected to become the largest party in Flanders as a consequence of the lockdown. They are currently looking for a way to breakoff Flanders as an independant state or looking to fuse Flanders with the Netherlands. For now all other parties hold currently to the 'Cordon sanitaire', an agreement from 1989 that excludes them from participating in any coalition governement. All of these groups and idiologies go back to the Flemish nationalist movement that rose up against the early domination of the French language after the founding of Belgium. Extreme elements of this movement have cooperated with the Nazis during WWII but also with Imperial Germany during the WWI occupation. This has left the Flemish nationalist movement with an unsavory history that it has trouble to move away from. The failure of the Belgian police response in the 'Mark Detroux' case and earlier in with 'Bende van Nijvel' has lead to sweeping changes with the Belgian police in 1998. The cover up that was mentoined was not about the crimes of Detroux but about the hiding of the systemic failure of the police and justice system to investigate the case with bad coorperation between services and no information sharing which could have led to an earlier arrest.
