Some work in progress and step by step on this character that I call "void explorer" from a project I'm working on currently and would be visible in full this month hopefully.

First picture : just flat and local colors

Second: main light source only one layer a bit sculpted, but not that much, that give already a 3D feeling

Third: adding a layer of more sculpted and volumetric shadow to give volumes in the main shadow.

Trying to rationalize my process more, because it's often far messier ^^'

Is there a tool to build this surface to render the 3d or is this just a manual process?

It's here totally manual process from imagination, I guess it's not totally accurate, but it is plausible enough to make the job. Maybe there is a tool, but I don't know it. However I saw some 3D mannequin software where you can pose it and adjust the light, but I don't use that stuff I prefer drawing and testing.
