Memories of Uncle Richard 1:

He was born to a religious mother and a coal mining father. I’m unclear on the details that happened during the in between but I knew he was a recovering alcoholic and that he found great comfort in going to his church. It was a different church I was told, but coming from a non-religious family I had limited experience understanding what that meant. I was around 9 or 10. We were invited to his Baptism and Rebirth Ceremony. He was not the only older person getting baptized that day. The congregation arrived in their pajamas. Sweats and tshirts, robes, slippers, and jeans for some. There was joyous music and happy smiling faces. He cried. My Aunt wore a matching set of sweats. She looked dressed up somehow. The pastor was casual and welcomed us like family. People cheered when he came out of the water. We ate delicious food and spent time together. As we left he hugged me and whispered in my ear, “Remember your Uncle Richard always loves you”
