IMPORTANT: iOS Patreon App and Membership (Patreon)

TLDR: Don't sign up using the iOS App. Instead, use a browser to sign up, it'll save you 30% over signing up in-app. If you do sign up using the iOS App, a 30% surcharge will apply.

TLDR 2: This does not apply to existing memberships, but if you cancel and sign back up using the iOS App this will apply to you.

Patreon informed us creators that effective November 2024, anyone signing up for a membership through the iOS app will no longer be redirected to a website, and will be forced to sign up using Apple's ecosystem. For us creators, this means that Apple will be taking a 30% cut of transactions for every month. This change is being forced on Patreon by Apple.

Thankfully, in order to reduce the burden to us, Patreon has allowed us to add the cost to membership made through the app so that our earnings aren't affected. We are also given the option to "eat" the cost.

I've opted not to eat the cost, and encourage folks NOT to sign up using the iOS App, and to discourage these kinds of anti-competitive practices by Apple (and honestly many other payment processors).

If you're an iOS App user, you can totally still sign up using the browser, or a desktop computer, and only pay the regular fee, and still use the iOS App to interact with content. But if you insist on signing up using the iOS app, you'll be charged an addition 30%.

Anyway, this really sucks, and I'm super grumpy at Apple for forcing this on Patreon, but I'm happy easy alternatives exist. Note that this does not apply to the Android app.
