Weekly update #1 (Patreon)
Content
Starting this week, each monday there will be an update where I talk about what happened in development in the previous week, game updates (playable alpha versions) will come less often, but with more content. The development will go better and faster than ever because after a 4 day break from development this week (after 14 months of continuously working on Infinitum) I feel better and more motivated than ever. There will also be many more reels and I also already started working on a new devlog, I plan to post those at least twice a month. So big plans ahead, for both the content and development areas.
Starting off with this week's update, the first thing I needed to take care of for the past week were the Items System because I have in sight a new crafting and building mechanic. The building mechanic is aimed to be used inside the bunker but some things might be able to be used outside of the bunker (a ladder for example). I also think maybe adding a level in the future where you can build a house or a base would be possible (so a level that saves the changes you do inside it). But currently the bunker serves as your base so the first thing that needs to be done is to add these systems for the bunker.
The changed items system now uses a data table where it takes the information from and to make the system work like this I also had to change the way Items spawn in the game which should fix now all of the items multiplayer glitches. This is how it looks:
Adding items is a lot easier now because all I have to do is add a new row and fill the required variables.
Many people suggested that there should be added a hotbar to the game, I experimented a little with a few designs but none of them were really fitting so I decided to go with a radial menu instead to quickly equip items or swap between them, this is the current design:
You can also change the keybind for this radial menu inside the settings but the full functionality hasn't been implemented yet and that will be one of the goals for the next week.
I also starter working on a new UI design, here is the current concept, but I still need to implement it in the game and add the actual functionality for it. It is inspired by cyberpunk 2077, which is a game I played during my break and I still do sometimes when I want to take a break from development and I love it.
It will probably change a little once I get the functionality down but I also plan on making these disappear from the screen when the values don't change (ex. the stamina and health are full) and appear when hunger/thirst bars go down.
Also I have removed the leaning system because I feel like it just adds extra 2 buttons to be used and it's not a feature that gives you any advantage over the entities and having too many buttons/keybinds to remember is not a good thing.
Thank you for reading and I'll see you guys next monday with the next update post. Please leave any feedback you may have or suggestions as a comment to this post!
