Duck plays dead to escape dog?

I saw a dog chasing ducks in a local river and was surprised when the duck appeared to play dead to escape the dogs attention. I didn't realise ducks did that. You can hear the dog's owner shouting in the background while her pooch completely ignores her because it's busy having fun in the river.

The dog in is "instinct mode", had the goose gone floppy, it might have been carried out of the river undamaged. Gun dogs have 'soft palettes' for just this reason. The real question is where is the frickin' owner, who should be kicked up the arse for letting the dog harass the wildlife.

I've seen swans "surf" the water with their beaks. Maybe it's feeding, and this goose is doing the same.

Yow! Poor bird and damn the dog owner!

This is the duck version of "I have a boyfriend."

"Leave me alone, I'm trying to eat."

You can hear the owner shouting at it from a distance while it completely ignores her.

Nice little video. After technical things, nature is probably my second favourite obsession. Cheers Clive 🫶

I've had a few dogs over the years. The first thing you do is establish a good recall command before letting it off the lead in public.

Considering the time of year, the goose was feigning , it has drawn the dog from the goslings that will be somewhere near by.

Looks as though the goose doesn't want to give the dog any more eye contact. Most of the dogs around our area (including our Springer - which we keep on a harness) tend to bark at any wildlife on our local pond before attempting to leap in, but as I've found if you have bread in one hand and dog in the other, the wildlife will still waddle up the bank for any food, regardless. Two geese on recognising our colourful plastic food bag, followed behind my wife for ages...

If that'd been one of the geese we had when I was a kid, the owner of that dog would be looking at a hefty vet bill. Our old Gander would tear flesh without provocation if you got between him and his girls.
