I was expecting this neat little lamp to use a simple resistor current limiter, but in reality it has a linear regulator made with standard common components.

Quite a neat and educational little circuit.

Neat vehicle lamp with current regulation (with schematic)

I was expecting this little filament-style LED lamp to use a simple resistor current limiter. But it uses a neat little linear current regulator instead. A perfect video for showing how voltage regulators can also be used to regulate current. The two different styles of filament caught me out. I initially thought it was going to be two identical filaments back to back. The rectifier is a very nice touch. This lamp will work either way round, or even on AC. Interesting lamp, I like the construction as it's easy to take apart and reverse engineer. I'm currently converting a 7 lamp aftermarket third brake light (with incandescent 5W bulbs of this style) to run as a KITT scanner with PWM control from an Arduino. I know that this control circuitry won't handle PWM dimming but I could just remove the active components and run this directly. My wiring is currently set up to handle the almost 4A on the common positive, would be nice to reduce that! Normal LED bulbs just look rubbish, whereas this has a good look to it.

I'd be interested to see thermal images of this bulb after it's been running for a while.

Nice teardown. Seems similar to a 317. If so, it veers towards low thermal dissipation. I'd like to see a V/I curve.

I wonder if this bulb would trick the bulb out error warnings in modern vehicles. I have tried a few led bulbs similar to this shape and they all give me a warning of bulb out. What are the key words to search for this bulb and was it on Ebay?

I have been using the LM317 in this configuration for years without realising it was a Linear Regulator. I just looked at it as a constant current source. I presume the names just means the same.

bigclive

Yeah, the LM317 is very useful as both a current and voltage controlled supply.

bigclive

I don't know if this one would pass enough current to trick the sensing circuit.

I like the long probe Clive has on his IPA bottle. Looks jolly handy for getting into awkward spaces for dismemberment reasons. Another thing to add to the repair toolkit. :-)
