The most pleasing thing about this light is the use of a modern LED driver chip to run a vintage mercury discharge lamp.

The circuitry has some strange features, and one very shady one.

Unusual USB germicidal light with hideous design feature

This is a rather unique USB rechargeable UVC germicidal light I got secondhand from eBay. I've not seen any other that uses a similar lamp with battery power. The circuitry started off quite pleasing until I spotted a rather dubious "option" link that bypasses a very important component deliberately. One notable feature of this light is the use of an LED driver to run a vintage technology mercury vapour discharge lamp. Modern UVC lights don't do anything. So, it's strange to see an old-fashioned lamp that actually kills you.

Question. The smd marked with a squarish O is a link, what is the smd marked R0?

In the 1970-80 as a kid I was exposed to a lot of arc welding while holding steel fabrication for my dad to weld my safety equipment was (shorts and a T shirt) and shut my eyes when I was told to do so. I had "arc eye" twice when I had a -side flash- when I was not involved in welding, I did however get a bit of sunburn so I am sure my Vitamin D levels in winter were quite good. I am sure MIG TIG arc is more sever compared to the stick rod since part of the arc is covered in flux as you weld. In recent years watching YT Chinese TIG welding they only had plastic clear glasses, I found out that some clear plastic glasses block UV ?

I found this link in 2016 about watching an atomic bomb test https://www.realclearscience.com/blog/2016/04/what_its_like_to_actually_see_an_atomic_explosion.html Extract "So I figured the only thing that could really hurt your eyes (bright light can never hurt your eyes) is ultraviolet light. I got behind a truck windshield, because the ultraviolet can't go through glass, so that would be safe,"

I would assume that R0 is a resistance of 0 Ohms, i.e. a link

The R0 component is the mosfet that connects the lamp to ground. When Big Clive is pointing out to components on the picture, he calls it out as the mosfet. Don't know why it is labeled R0. *shrug*

Fantastic Ultra-charge. Want 5A charge current? Here's your circuit :)

It's harder fining materials that UVC passes through. Most glasses and plastics block it.

The component physically marked with R0 appears to be an N-channel MOSFET.
