I've featured lights like this before, but they all seem to have their own little twist on the circuitry.  I wonder if they originate from the same factory or if they have just become so popular that they are widely copied.

This one's circuitry twist had me puzzling for a while.  It's clever and weird simultaneously.

I subsequently hacked this light to put a 1 ohm resistor in series with each of the LEDs to bring the power consumption and heat down.

I've looked at a few of these before and they all seem to have some weird circuitry twist. This one initially looked almost identical to the blue Aldi unit, but the circuitry has some weird bits that are actually quite clever. What's not clever is the current the LEDs are being run at. With a freshly charged battery the current draw was:- High (2 LEDs lit) 3.8A - 11W Medium (1 LED lit) 3A - 9W Low (other LED lit) 1.6A - 4.8W When the zero-ohm links are removed and replaced with one of the 1 ohm resistors the current drops to:- Both LEDs lit:- 1.75A - 5.25W One LED lit:- 1A - 3W The light output is still very useful, but the light runs much cooler and has a considerably higher run time on a charge. That makes it better suited as a rechargeable light source during these turbulent times. Very cool. Thanks Big Clive. I think it would be pretty fidgety to pop in new resistance for those tiny little surface mount resistors. I'm still trying to get up the nerve to swap out the little guy for the USB charging board to drop it from 1 amp to half or less. So very tiny.

Oh, I always love the print outs of the boards you do. Any chance you could share the type of printer you use and maybe the sort of paper too? They look really great and since our phones are practically microscopes these days, I'd love to be able to print out various things like that.

The image reminds me of Chinese face painting done in Kabuki theater but I can't find a match.

The graphic is of "Njar, eater of Souls." Specifically invoked on Chinese circuit boards to punish anyone trying to reverse engineer them. Used principally by incompetent design engineers to prevent their line managers from discovering how bad they are at their work.

Curtis Hoffmann

Actually, the graphic is made up of at least 2 Chinese characters, which I assume give the name of the circuit board manufacturer, or maybe the Core company's Chinese electronics producer. I can't read Chinese, so I can't say more than that. But, it does look like it's upside-down in the video.

Definitely a Minion.

I bought one of thge Aldi lamps after BC did the teardown and review, and I must say it is an excellent worklight. My son also uses it for making his "Stop Motion" films.

I see things like pcb-level products that are both manufactured / cloned with slight differences and also as identical products available through a number of distributors. The same seems true in complete products. I wonder what the overall ethos is - uncontrolled and fairly accurate copying, distribution .. I don't know.

I think it’s a white bear. ?

You can also solder a full size resistor across the contacts to give you something to hold onto easier.

Why settle for mere overheating with 2 COBs when you could experience a 5 COB meltdown? Search for "5COB Working Lamp W856" or https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256803609349332.html. I found that one on the packaging of the 4 COB (W855) version I received. Bonus detachable solar charger in every package.
