This time around I bring you several bugfixes, a handful of performance improvements, proper 16:9 HDMI output without black bars, dismiss-able MicroSD card notifications and a new toggle to force portrait-only apps into landscape mode.

How to install: Download and install 7zip on your system, download all attached files (SDFlash if you have a >= 4GB MicroSD card ready, MaskROM otherwise) into the same folder, extract the file ending with .001 by right-clicking it and choosing "7-Zip -> Extract Here" and finally open README.txt for further instructions.

Things to note when updating from a previous build: If you previously had Google Apps installed, please make sure you re-install them after the update to avoid crashes!

For those needing the Google Play Store: Reboot into TWRP and install the latest OpenGapps ARM64 9.0 Pico bundle! (I suggest you finish the first-time setup with WiFi disabled... things move so much faster if you do!)

For those needing root: Magisk is included out of box and only needs to be activated on first boot. A WiFi connection is required for the initial Magisk activation.

Things to note when using the "Fast" sleep mode: WiFi & BT adapters can get stuck in a disabled state when put to sleep without going through their proper early-suspend routines (which is what the "Fast" sleep mode omits to enter sleep faster). If this happens to you, please reboot your device to re-initialize your WiFi & BT adapters, or even better, only use "Fast" sleep mode if you don't plan to use WiFi & BT for a while.

Changelog

 • The HDMI output resolution has been changed to 1920x1080 (no more black bars)
 • The ARC browser video inset has been adjusted (preview videos are no longer cut off)
 • A vold partition table detection bug has been fixed (more MicroSD cards & USB storage devices work now)
 • The default interactive governor settings have been adjusted (improves scrolling fluidity)
 • The minimum scaling frequency has been set to 800MHz (improves scrolling fluidity and decreases sleep battery drain a little)
 • The GPU governor settings have been adjusted (improves scrolling fluidity and should help with some more graphically demanding games)
 • The default renderer has been set to OpenGL (improves scrolling fluidity)
 • A new toggle has been added that allows forcing portrait-only apps into landscape orientation (Netflix, AliExpress, etc.)
 • The quick-tile descriptions in the SystemUI edit view have been updated to better reflect what they do
 • You can now permanently dismiss volume mount notifications for MicroSD cards (which means they will no longer spam you after every reboot)
 • A SystemUI rendering issue has been fixed (it now renders its transparent background properly)

I tried using the SDFlash method, and I got a pink background with email and contacts on the main screen. Did I do something wrong?

Can anyone help me? I read over the instructions on how to root this thing but I'm kind of lost. Whenever i rooted my phone i had to patch a boot room in order for it to work. So I'm not sure how i activate Magisk, because i installed the app and it says that it requires an additional setup. What am i doing wrong here?

Awesome... 1st time stuck on the android logo, but after repeating the ritual from the beginning it went smoothly after clearing the data. Although confused because there is no browser application & after installing the gaps everything is ok. Btw, in this RG 552 the TWRP already exists from the start or after installing this ROM? Because I remember never installed TWRP. Great job & thanks.

Android 8.1 and 9.0 builds will auto install TWRP. 11 builds run stock recovery at this point.

Cool... Thank you very much for shortening the rooting time. I really appreciate your work.

Anyone else having issue with their fan after updating to this version of 9.0? My Fan worked fine on the stock anbernic provided Android 11 firmware, now even on the highest CPU setting and fan on HIGH, it never turns on. Any known issues?

Anonymous

Can you use a Mac to install this on to the RG552?

blackseraph

If you use the SDFlash installation method then yes. All you need to do is use a disk imaging software of choice to write the provided image to a MicroSD card. All of this is explained in the included README file though.

hi, beware since it might hardware related; got the same issue when running Jelos, but ended up shacking the device a bit (when off of course) and fan restarted! it seems as if it gets somehow stuck.

blackseraph

Quality control issues? Did you two try getting in touch with Anbernic yet? Maybe they can provide some spare parts. Try tagging IdeaYu, their sales manager on Twitter.

I followed all of the steps, ran the bat file and continued to hit yes many times... but when it was all done, the device did not reboot itself. Waited a couple of hours with no luck. Now my device does not boot on the android side. Any tips?

blackseraph

Do yourself a favor and use the SDFlash method for installation. It requires a Micro SD card but it's a lot easier to handle for beginners.

Has anyone else tried running dead cells using BS Android 9 os? This game worked great for two runs, then 90% of the button controls stopped working. Found a reddit thread from a year ago with folks experiencing this issue but no resolution other than one person mentioning "turning off accessibility features".

I just installed this, and the android is working, but I tried getting into TWRP (holding F+power) but it only just launches Android. Any tips for making sure TWRP installed?

blackseraph

You can boot into Android and use ADB to reboot into TWRP as well. The adb command is "adb reboot recovery".

Sorry for being dense, but could you please provide some further instructions on how to deploy the Google Play Store. I downloaded the OpenGaps program as you have suggested, but have no idea how to boot into TWRP and install this. I do have a clean Android 9 Black Seraph image now on my RG552 but really need the play store.

blackseraph

Try opening Magisk, open the hamburger menu, go to Modules, open the ... menu and pick Reboot to Recovery.

Sorry again, but I cannot even find the Hanburger memu, is this in Android? I found that I can get into TWRP by holding down function button and Power, but when I go to Install, and select the GApps folder that I copied over from the pico opengaps it does not give me an option to install. When I check the contents inside they are all tar.lz files and TWRP only supports image or zip files. I only installed Android 9 from the sdflash method and nothing else if that helps.

Glenn Shoemake

That was the problem, it is installing now, i´m sure it will work now. Thanks a lot for your quick assistance.
