I always saw Vegeta as a darker version of Goku as in, I always saw Vegeta as if a real life person with real life flaws were to attempt to be like Goku. Goku and Vegeta essentially are the same character and have the same traits, but ultimately, one is an ideal and the other is what that ideal looks like when confronted with the brutality of real life.
