Ever since I was a kid I've only ever consumed Japanese media because I knew that this western stuff was hardcore corporate and soulless. Otaku culture in many ways is the counterculture that already exists against corporatism. In Japan artists simply cater to what otaku want rather than to evil, subversive, corporate values.
