I mean, its sized to here I left it but I keep getting comments to include hirez, is patreon art posts that bad?


Also patreon somehow turns png files into jpg.

Yes. Patreon re-compresses the file when it uploads, as it sees it as a "preview" not a file to distribute. The file attached is indeed still a PNG, as imageMagick and linux see it as such*; patreon prolly' renamed the extension. The preview is 720x400 compared to 1600x891: Thats a reduction of more than 50%! The reason peeps hate jpg is the way it destroys data as it compresses. It's like a crappy mp3 compared to a lossless flac. Jpg was mostly intended for Photography, not for lineart or shaded art. For Photography most of the "data" is unnessecary(as it is noise) unless you are trying to manipulate the photo out of range (ie RAW). However in line-art, Grayscale, and Color art work; JPG throws away data that is actually nessecary. The reason is that in JPG, it seperates the RGB into a YCbCr color scheme, then heavily and lossily compresses the Chroma channels. It also compresses the Luma, and then stitches them back together. The problem is that this system is fine for a photo, were most of the color is noise, and most of the time you won't notice it. But in art it crushes the range and often corrupts the color, so what would normally just be a smooth gradient(a coloring technique you use often) ends with compression artifacting, and noise in the color. Png simply takes the RGB color data and compresses it losslessly. It is often bigger, but again it's lossless. It also supports Alpha Channel. Jpg does not. In short, PNG is the Best for color art, GIF for 256 color/8bit greyscale/monochrome line art.
