Hey folks, we got a ton of great suggestions for the next game, and since it's the holidays and I'm feeling generous, this poll will have five games instead of four. As always, the poll will run for two weeks, you can vote for as many games as you like, and the 2nd place game will reserve a spot on the next poll.

On Mars: Of course we have to start with the last poll's second place game (Two polls in a row! Is the third time the charm?). This heavy euro is about exploring the red planet and building a colony. The setting and artwork are tailor made to draw me in, though Vital Lacerda games are always a bit intimidating. Of course, that just means that a rules video would be that much more necessary for people. There's also a new expansion out, so I'd gladly cover that too.

John Company: The most suggested game was one that has only recently popped into my radar, being Sam of Lord of the Board's choice on his Fire and Ice awards for best game of 2022! (And btw if you haven't watched that video, check it out) This is a game about managing the East India Trading Company and trying to build generational wealth for your family. I like that, same as Pax Pamir, Leder Games is not shying away from the heaviness of it's theme, but instead using it to help you understand just how much impact these horrible people could have.

Obsession: I wouldn't have expected something that could be described as Downton Abbey: The Board Game to have gotten as popular as it has, but people have really been flocking to this game as of late and I'd love to give it a try. You manage a Victorian era English estate and are looking to raise your standing through deck building, worker placement, and hand management. There's also an expansion or two, though I'm having a bit of trouble finding copies of this game, so I can't guarantee that I'll be able to get a hold of it.

Food Chain Magnate: Tied for second on the suggestions poll is one that we've seen here a few times before. It's a cutthroat economic game about managing your fast food empire. This game also stands out to me for being having the one of the biggest chasms between popularity and visual design I've ever seen in a game, but that just speaks to how good the game must be. There's also an expansion that I would gladly cover along with the main game.

Clash of Cultures: Monumental Edition: And because it's the holidays I'm adding a fifth game to the poll. My editor's choice is a game that  takes the original classic of civilization building goodness and gives it a fresh coat of paint, cool new minis, and the two expansions that came out, all in one box. I've heard a lot of good things about this, and I've been itching to play a good Civ style game lately, so let me know if you feel the same.

John company for sure

I really love John Company! but I’m mostly partial to teaching it via going through a round and encouraging people to pull levers. It would be nice to have a breakout video to explain deregulation.

(that’s my long winded way of saying I voted for Food Chain Magnate, which always causes me to trip over myself when I try to explain the rules)

I've been wanting to learn Food Chain Magnate for ages! Let's make it happen.

I initially voted for this, but then I read Jeff's post where he made a good point about playing through a round and having players just play around with the mechanisms vs. a straight rules burst. There's a long video on YouTube of a teach/playthrough led by Cole Wehrle. FCM won out because of its lack of rules coverage.

I picked up On Mars years ago but was always too intimidated to actually play it. I played my first game this week and I still don’t think I truely understand it - please do a how to play video so I can lock in into my brain!

Would love to see Frosthaven covered.

The key to On Mars is building the colony ASAP. You will need blueprints which can only be acquired on the space side of the board. Fulfilling those blueprints upgrades the structures in the colony but makes them YOUR buildings as far as resource production is concerned. Get the resources; get the blueprints; build the structures which upgrades the colony which eventually ends the game. But pay attention to the resources on the space station as they only replenish once the colony has been upgraded. You need to have more upgraded structures on the planet in order to acquire resources that don't deplete the space station's resources and allow you to be more planet-bound where you can continue to build, use your rover and bots to acquire tech upgrades, etc.

Would love Clash of Cultures Monumental... but can't complain since you're doing Star Trek Ascendency! And happy New Year to everyone :)

RTFM

I'd love to play it! If it makes to the suggestion post next time around I'm sure it'll get to the poll.
