Man there are a lot of pirate games coming to kickstarter these days. I've had to play two games for Rahdo's channel (Sea of Legends and recently Tiny Epic Pirates), and I know there are going to be two more featured in the coming weeks. Also, since y'all get the secret behind-the-scenes scoop, I'll let you know that Sea of Legends is the better game by far. Of course, it's also significantly more expensive, so do with that as you will. What always surprises me about these theme-based surges is the fact that it takes a long time to design a game, meaning that several people independently had the idea to make a pirate game several months/years ago. It's weird.

Also on Rahdo's channel this month I got to play Pax Pamir 2nd Edition, which I enjoyed even more than I thought I would. And on top of that I filmed my first ever Top 10 games list. The topic being what games would we bring with us to a desert island. I've mostly shied away from doing these because my knowledge if games strongly skews towards depth rather than breadth. As you'll see if you watch that entirely too long video, there are quite a few games on the others' lists that I just haven't played, whereas most of my games are pretty well known. However we did enjoy making the video and people seemed to like it, so we'll probably be making more. I also thoroughly enjoyed breaking people's expectations with picks like this.

As for RTFM, we're into the boring part of the video process, writing the script for War of the Ring. Not that I dislike it, but it certainly takes a fair bit of time to do. It is continuing apace however, and I'm looking forward to shooting it. I was hoping to get both the game and all of the expansions, but one of them is currently out of print until July and there's a new expansion coming out in Q4, so I've decided to hold off on the expansion video until I can get all of them together in one.

To anyone who's played War of the Ring, I'm curious about something. I've played five games of it now (2 as Shadow and 3 as the Free Peoples) and every single time the Shadow player has won. I hear a lot about how balanced it is, and I want to believe that, but this is a pretty surprising outcome. I definitely feel like the strategy for Shadow is a lot more obvious from the get-go, but even now, both Nick and I feel like the Free Peoples have a pretty hard time. Have any of you had similar experiences?

And now for the obligatory Spirit Island pic. We actually managed to win this game, though it was very close at times.

I hope everyone is staying safe out there. LA is in a pretty tumultuous state at the moment, as are quite a few cities across the US. So whether you're out protesting or staying at home, make sure to take care of yourself and the people around you.

We found that it is pretty skewed toward the Shadow player, too. I watched the opening of the 10 games vids; looks great and fun. Hoping you still do your own content here, though I'm glad you're getting major exposure through Rahdo!! Thanks for the feeling on Sea of Legends...I'm considering backing it, 'cause Pirates and the designer told me that you can have same-sex lovers, which is cool and inclusive. Stay well and safe.

RTFM

I'll definitely keep making videos on RTFM. In fact I'm actually hoping to increase my output in the coming months, though it depends on a couple of factors outside of my control, so we'll see. You can indeed have same-sex lovers in Sea of Legends. The story software they made doesn't really care who you feel like loving. They're also pulling from a very diverse group of writers for the quests, so I'm excited to see how it all turns out.

That's great news, Shea! Your videos are awesome! Can't wait to dig into the Adv Dune vids. Cool about the writers...I'm definitely going to back.

I've played war of the ring twice as the free people's player and won once. I found that the FPP strategy very much focuses on just slowing down the shadow player while you can either get the fellowship to Mordor or hold 2 shadow strongholds for a full round. Laying siege to a settlement is very time consuming since you can only do one round of combat for each die you play (unless you spend your elites to continue the combat), so if you can hold the territory for multiple turns, you can really slow the shadow player down while you go after his less defended northern territories or progress the fellowship. Also, make sure you split up the fellowship as your companions can really help with combat. As for the ring victory condition, you really want to get those blue hunt tokens in play, because once you're on the Mordor track you will take a lot of corruption points very quickly. At that point, it becomes a bit of a game of chance.

RTFM

The last game I played I was really hoping to move the Fellowship and just use military to slow the Shadow down...and then I barely rolled any swords. When I did roll them, it coincided with the Shadow rolling 3+ eyes, so it never felt great to move. I'm hoping to go for it more next time, but man did it feel rough in the moment.

Ah. That sounds rough. I haven't quite experienced that but when you have the shadow player rolling lots of eyes, that's a good time to focus on the military victory as the shadow player is at a disadvantage when it comes to action economy and his ability to react to your movements. I definitely felt that I needed to juggle back and forth between the two win strategies depending on the dice. Also, the elven rings do help with letting you force a few rolls in your favour when you really need them. I feel like they are generally more beneficial to the fellowship player than the shadow so passing them off to the shadow player is usually a worthwhile play if you really need one particular die. Also, getting leaders out there will help you use unwanted sword dice for military actions when you need to avoid moving the fellowship.

I've played 3 times: 2 Free peoples win (1 ring + 1 military victory) vs 1 Shadow. Cant remember the exact strategies.
