August Roadmap (Patreon)

Welcome to August! July started off awesome. We did a ton of Martian sketches, a poll, some full color characters, released a new brush set… aaaand then a huge storm came through and smashed our house with a tree. (5 trees actually...) We were just outside on the porch watching the storm roll in under a greenish sky and saw the trees bend in half in the high winds. "Woweee that is crazy!" we thought. And then they just kept bending...

We ran inside just as things started to go completely to pieces outside...

The power got knocked out for 4 days and our house got smashed up. Thankfully no one was hurt (other than me, stabbing myself in the leg with roof shrapnel, while I was wrestling with tarps in the rain, like some drunken dumpster-diving raccoon.)

So the last half of the month went from pleasant days of painting, to clearing away our beautiful old trees and covering broken windows. Much of this coming month will be taken up with repairs and a running dog-fight with the insurance company, all of which will cut into posting and streaming for me this month.

But all is not lost. While the storm did break some windows, it didn’t get my coffee, so I WILL SURVIVE, and hopefully be able to get this mess cleaned up and still get to paint some new creatures later in the month.

I'm still going to try to do Mentorships and they are happening and will be on the following schedule:

Thanks for your patience everyone! Hopefully we will get this mess tidied up and back on track soon. I want to have some big months this fall, with a lot more traditional watercolor, some really elaborate metaphorical monsters, and of course, some big fantasy battle scenes for halloween. So let's get to it!

Justin Gerard Hello! I am an illustration lover from China. Especially like your illustration works. Every once in a while I subscribe to your patreon and then use the translation software to read the drawing techniques and creative tips you share. I always feel out of ideas when I try to draw some concept sketches. I hope you can share your thoughts on concept sketching and drawing in detail in graphic form sometime. Will the Monster of the Month continue? I'd love to participate.

Justin Gerard just now Great idea! I will make a note to do that one soon. In the meantime, there are posts in the tutorials tier about "passion projects" which is very close to this. I'd suggest checking those out while waiting for the new post as they offer some of my thoughts related to it. And both the Monster of the Month and #LETSDRAWMONSTERS will return. I have a big client job that is keeping me from starting those up at the moment, but it should be over by September, so hopefully we can start it all up again in October.
