Here is the 5th image in the series A Plague of Dragons.

I had a lot of fun working on the castle for this one. It's been awhile since I've gotten to do some nice architecture, something I don't usually love doing, but was really enjoyable here.

The most challenging aspect was using the linework in the drawing as a guide for brushwork in the opaque color phase. I loved it in the sky and landscape, but found it cumbersome to work with over the figure.  I may try and tone some of the heavier texture down on the figure work in the future. Which may be difficult, because I love the energy in the drawing and I have a hard time stopping at the point where it would be most ideal to paint on. I want to paint with the pencil!  Anyway, it was a really enjoyable piece to work on. I look forward to sharing how it turned out in layout for the sketchbook with you later this year.

Interesting how you could have stopped earlier at panel 3 for something that would evoke the look and feel of Dulac or Rackham. Hah, kind of an illustrative "ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny!"

I actually almost did! I even showed it to some other artists to get their take on that. In the end, as much as I liked it at frame 3 (before all the opaque work) it wouldn't have been consistent with the other images in the series, so it might have looked out of place in the sketchbook. Truthfully though, if it weren't for the sketchbook... I might very well have stopped there

Thanks for sharing your work, it's quite interesting to see your approach and how you build an image.
