The idea for this month's Classic Fantasy Illustration image was thought up by my wife, the incredibly talented Annie Stegg Gerard. Initially, I wasn't sure what to go with for this month and I asked her over coffee what she would do if she were me. All I mentioned is that it needed some dragons since I wanted it to fit with the theme of my upcoming sketchbook. So she came up with this idea on the spot and I thought it was perfect.

So Annie will be playing art director for this one! It should be a lot of fun and if you guys haven't already, you should check out her Patreon! :D

MATERIALS: The drawing for the image was done at 11x14 inches on smooth heavyweight bristol using 2h and 6B graphite pencils. I draw the major forms in with the lighter pencil, and then go across the paper (left to right) and lay in the darker lines, shadows and occlusions. To get a sense of how I am executing these here is the drawing at the half-way point:

I think I will need to come up with a better name for it, something that gives a little more narrative depth, but for now we're going with the working title of The Dragonslayer. I plan to wait until I finish the color version to give it a proper title, but if you have any ideas for a good name let me know in the comments!

Brilliant idea and interpretation of the idea. Really interesting to also see the in-progress drawing and hear how you approach a larger drawing.
