Don't know if you caught it last episode, but Missy mentioned the Doctor's new accent and that she thinks she'll keep it, so is Missy's Scottish accent been influenced by the Doctor's regeneration?

your discussion about the doctor still discovering himself was spot on that's why i love this season because we see a completely different doctor "you are a good dalek" is a great line

Mordirit

It's a little weird when you catch it on the fly going season to season, but now that I see this season again I love it a lot; it feels like they made it so him being "forced" into a new set of regenerations, they messed up with his mind. It's like he is going well beyond the limits of a timelord, so this regeneration almost feels like he is being born again and slowly learning again what it is to be himself.

In the original script for this episode when The Doctor says "course you have, you have unfinished work don't you" he knew what Rusty was about to do. In the script he enters the Dalek ship and blows himself up taking the ship & them with him. I would imagine this was never shot due to the fact that Rusty basically becomes a suicide bomber but it's how it was written originally. It's just implied instead & saves on shooting costs too I suppose.

At least part of the reason the show looks different is that this season brought in some excellent new directors. (New to Doctor Who--some of them had decades of experience.)

Jason

On a geeky level I love that seemingly practical camera move of The Doctor & Clara in one shot entering The TARDIS as he kicks the door open when she joins him on the adventure 😍

Bekah

I love Pink's self talk monologues because let's face it. ESPECIALLY when we're trying to get the girl, people do that.

Actually there was a leaked black and white version before the season aired, and this scene was there.

I think the guys are kinda misunderstanding 12's personality. It's not that he doesn't find Clara unattractive, it's that he doesn't care what she looks like. It's not that he's insecure, it's that he doesn't care if people are judging him. It's not that he's not confident, it's that he's more honest when he doesn't know what he's doing. The Twelfth Doctor just does not care about what people think, what they say, or what they do. He's a bit of a dick, and he's too old to care about it. Twelve is the Doctor finally showing his age and everything that comes with it. He's grumpy and doesn't like people, and he's no longer putting up the facade of being the dashing young hero that he's kept up for so long

Will

Yeah, no attraction to Clara at all.

Spiderfrommars

Indeed. Ben Wheatley is an arthouse film director (Kill List, Sightseers etc) and his two episodes are very stylish. Rachel Talalay, who directed all the Capaldi finales, directed films too.

Wonder if Eric knows more than he's letting on, he thought he heard the name missy before it was even mentioned last episode, and his theorizing here is close to the bone.

Doby Greg

I think this episode would work better with a more established doctor. He is so undefined that it feels a bit early for him to be defined by daleks.

Now that we're into the Capaldi Era, not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet. This isn't a spoiler about Dr Who but a trend with other reactions. Episode 9x11 is cursed, almost every person who reacts to it has technical issues. Versions have been lost, deleted, corrupted or cameras have stopped working. Just something to be wary of.

In terms of the soldier thing, keep in mind that the Doctor became a soldier, fought in the most terrible war imaginable, did monstrous things, and then vowed never to do anything like that again. Cut to The Time of the Doctor, and he's spent 900 years fighting another war for the Time Lords, and now finds himself in a new life he was never supposed to have. And then pretty much his first proper adventure out the gate, when he's still unsure of himself and what he's meant to represent, his ultimate nemesis looks at him and says they're better than him. He's a walking existential crisis and his aversion to soldiers is complete deflection and self-hatred. Personally, I think it's an amazing and complexly interesting character arc.

Yea we gotta be careful, 9x11 just might be the best episode of New Who.

Robert Trainer

Can't wait for Robot of Sherwood, see the Doctor flip 'em the bird.

I always thought that the 12th Doctor made those jokes about Clara's appearance as a bit of a coping mechanism. The attraction 11 had to Clara is still there, in my opinion, but The Doctor looks like an old man now so he has to remind himself that he can no longer have the romantic relationship with her that he once had. By making negative remarks about her appearance he reinforces the notion that he shouldn't show his sexual attraction to her anymore. It's as though he is trying to convince himself that he is no longer attracted to her.
