I think one of the main themes of the series as a whole was said by Lestrade all the way back in A Study in Pink: "Sherlock Holmes is a great man. And one day, if we are very, very lucky, he might even be a good one."

She WAS his wife when they filmed Season 3. When they started season 4 they were already living apart. Each have a new partner but they still have 2 kids together.

Yup, Toby Jones and his disgusting prosthetic teeth are brilliant in this story. Not sure if you guys read this (I think you don't), but this might make you appreciate how horrific his portrayal is when you know this is very loosely based on the behaviour of Jimmy Saville (though he wasn't actually a murderer) - a scarily creepy celeb who also was allowed free access to hospitals where he abused people.

I don't like that Sherlock losing it was a way to force Watson's hand. I would have preferred if it was a genuine thing rather than an elaborate plan. And I really don't like that it came from Mary. I did really like the performance of the villain, the talk in the last 10 minutes and that great reveal of the third sibling.

From the beginning, the creators of "Sherlock" have insisted their show 'is not a detective show, but a show about a detective'. And you are correct that Lestrade's line is an important - since, from its inception, the creators of "Sherlock" have stated Sherlock is NOT "a good man". They have said the goal of their series is to 'humanize' Sherlock. Their goal is to have Sherlock *learn* to be a good man. That is the purpose of the show. Of course that raises the question: what do the writers think *is* "a good man"? I think they spent all of the last four episodes writing essentially a single story which answers that question. And I would say Benedict Cumberbatch nails their answer - and the theme of the last season (and, ultimately, the entire series) - when he summarized Series 4 as "Love conquers all". I would say more, but I don't want to spoil anything for those who haven't yet watched the final episode.

From "Abominable Bride" onward, there are many problematic issues with the episodes. Part of the reason for this is that these last 4 episodes essentially form one continuous story, with each intentionally mirroring important aspects of the others so as to unify them all thematically. Theme was their overriding concern in the last season - and in serving it, they sacrificed aspects of both plot and characterization. I did not like this either. But I have to say the brilliance of their integration of that theme through the entire last season is simply astonishing - and renders insignificant any qualms I have about the plot/characterizations. I can't say more at this point, for it would serve as a spoiler for the final episode. That said, I would LOVE it if - after the "FINAL" episode - they went back and watched Abominable Bride, since the final episode does a complete 'Sixth Sense' twist to the ENTIRETY of "Bride".
