It's September Singalong time! That's right! It's musicals and music-themed movies that are coming right for ya. Which is great because I *LOVE* the following movies.

And because of the aforementioned schedules, this time we're doing a relaxing, cozy SUNDAY stream, TODAY! Sunday 9/24 starting at 1020am pacific time!

As always, it will be on https://www.twitch.tv/filmcrithulk

TO THE LINEUP!

1020am - pre-roll

1030am - Top Hat (1935) - We have yet to do an Fred Astaire / Ginger Rogers singing + dancing picture and I can't think of a better occasion! I actually like some scenes from Swing Time better, but this one doesn't have all the truly awful climactic racism. So Top Hat it is! Get ready to be like "how does a human being move like that?"

1145am - Yentl (1983) - I can't wait for those of you who have never seen, nor heard of this to see this film. Because it's a FASCINATING Barbara Streisand movie that ends up commenting on gender fluidity, the jewish experience, immigration, society standards, and so much more. Also, Mandy Patinkin is, like, SO HOT in this film.

230pm - That Thing You Do (1996) - You better not even try to wear pants watching this movie because they will be CHARMED off before you know it. Tom Hanks' directorial debut is such an infectious movie that utterly reflects the delights of the ear worm hit song that powers it. Plus some real mid 90s heartthrobs!

420pm - The Wiz (1978) - Hoo boy. So I want to show this film because it feels like an important document of film history (specifically white Hollywood's attempts to bring Blaxploitation ethos into mainstream prestige faire). For those who don't know, it's based on the popular all Black stage adaptation that itself is an adaption of The Wizard of Oz. At it's best, it's sparkling, dazzling commentary with amazing performances. But mostly it's a bizarre, odd, and incredibly sad movie that Lumet never really seemed to get a grip on (wonder WHY he maybe wasn't the right choice, huh?). But it's also a showcase for incredible musical legends Diana Ross, Nipsey Russell, Lena Horne, Ted Ross, Richard Pryor and... well this also comes with a huge CONTENT WARNING because Michael Jackson is also in it. I waffled on showing this a lot, but if part of the goal of these streams is digging into film history and dealing with work as objects to be contextualized, then this is absolutely one of those  important inflection point movies to understand about 1978. And I'm just surprised how many people don't know this massive, expensive movie exists - and it is quite the feat of production to behold.

635pm - Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping (2016) - This delightful comedy will bring the energy of the room RIGHT BACK UP. It's so silly, it's so stupid, it's so funny, and it's so great. If you've never seen it, I can't wait for you all to see some of my favorite scenes. Jorma Taccone for life!

805pm - We Are The Best! (2013) - You know how I sometimes like to program the beautiful, earnest, less-head-of little film that will work its way into your heart at the 8pm slot? Yeah, well get ready for one of those! I won't say anything more as it works best if you know nothing. Just watch it with us.

950pm - Streets of Fire (1984) - There's STRONG midnight movie energy with this next one, but we're putting it here in the 10pm slot instead. Because coming off the success of The Driver, The Warriors, and 48 Hours, writer / director Walter Hill put all his chips in the center to make this absolutely bonkers "Rock & Roll Fable" that completely rules, actually. Sure, it didn't do well, but it's too odd to imagine why would. Because it's just one of those movies that arrived with cult energy completely in tact (along with one obvious casting reason it doesn't work, but we'll get to that in the chat). And to all you "Horny For Unhinged Willem Dafoe" Goblins? Hoo boy, do I have a treat for you.

1130 am - Secret Screening #1 - I'm sorry.

105am - Secret Screening #2 - I'm sorrier.

Get your singing voice ready!

The Apple... I knew it!

...I knew I was going to miss newbies experiencing The Wiz AND We Are The Best! AND Popstar. But now you're telling me I also missed what would have been my first viewing of The Apple? [Lloyd Bridges "Airplane!" voice]: "Looks like I picked the wrong week to have insurmountable scheduling issues"
