Quick Hit: The Slow Fast Death of Twitter & Questions For Where Where We Wanna Be? (Patreon)

Update: working on a MEGA Anime Column about Kill La Kill and several other properties, just wanted to touch base on the OTHER thing going on with Twitter.

It’s funny. One random day you’re started a dumb novelty twitter account for funsies and then twelve years later you’re writing something like this. I can’t explain it. It’s been a weird strange path. But anyways Elon bought Twitter and went full-Elon and now it’s burning in embers. In the macro sense, I don’t care. It’s been a massive detriment and accelerating so many terrible fascist things in the world and we’ve slowly been sliding more and more into the hellfire since pre-Trump. And what we’re witnessing now is just the rapidly acceleration of all the horrid systems already in place. Truth is that I don’t use it like I used to (or most social media) because it’s pretty much just a source of massive anxiety. In that sense, it all kind of feels like a relief. But in a micro sense, the obvious problem is that a lot of people came out of a platform and it’s their way of interacting and more importantly, if you put any work out into the world you really end up depending on that platform whether you like it or not. But it’s part of the reason I’ve loved building this space over the last few years. It’s a little corner of the sandbox that feels nice and all I’m really looking for. The only problem is that it’s not a sharing platform. And it’s not that want any rapid growth or any of that nonsense. Lord no. It’s only for finding the few new people who genuinely want to come in and hang out here. And even for things like that, you’re still pretty dependent on broader social media.

So I’m kinda of just fishing y’all for curiosity on what your *other* online platform worlds look like, especially, where do you discover things? Especially people writing things? And what’s your more healthy internet life look like?

If that sounds vague and unspecific, it’s because it is! Right now I have an instagram https://www.instagram.com/filmcrithulk/?hl=en , but I’ve mostly just been putting cooking on it and it’s not a great system for linking. Meanwhile, I looooooooove doing the twitch screenings https://www.twitch.tv/filmcrithulk , which has been my favorite internet hang out in thing in forever, but that’s also just a really small, contained thing (that I even don’t link cause I don’t like the chats getting too big). Youtube’s https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCV0UDLQyF2bGnR5KrVVg5cQ great for putting up videos, but pretty brutal algorithms can hit against the work time-cost. And I actually love tik tok, but so far I’ve enjoyed fact that I have some dumb account where I don’t friend anyone and just ENJOYED a carefully curated algorithm. Occasionally I get an idea for some dumb joke, but the whole thing terrifies me as an actual enterprise?

I don’t know, I’m sort of just talking out loud and commiserating and curious what you’ve all been going through in this weird, weird time. Who knows even what tomorrow will be like.
