Valentines Day weekend approaches! Booo!!! Or yay!!! Or whatever!!!

Either way, it's just a great excuse to watch some classic ROMANTIC films, comedic or otherwise. I also felt it needed some little mini-theme within the theme so a lot of these films examine the intersections of love and class.

As always it will be shown over on twitch at: https://www.twitch.tv/filmcrithulk

The marathon is TODAY - Friday 2/11 - and starting at 1pm PACIFIC TIME. And as always, the line-up is subject to tweaks.

To said line-up!

1 pm (pacific time) - Pre Show

130 pm - All that Heaven Allows - If you've never seen a Douglas Sirk film before, boy are you in for a treat. It's so full of gorgeous technicolor, unapologetic romance, and Rock Hudson wearing some damn fine flannel.

3 pm - Ninotchka - I have a feeling all the big Lubitsch movies will eventually show up in these twitch screenings, but few films cover the hilarious spectrum of love, sex, and communism better than this 1939 treasure.

5 pm - Down With Love - What's this??? A modern era throwback to the 1960's "no-sex sex comedies!?" Yes please!!! It's so good that I often lay awake thinking about how if this film was a hit then Peyton Reed would have kept getting to make fun blank check films like this and I weep for humanity's loss.

645 pm - Love and Basketball - Is Gina Prince-Bythewood the most criminally underrated director working today? Seems so! Even this debut showcases everything she does well: taking what may seem like an overt premise and making it so much more intimate, understated, and thoughtful than you'd ever imagine. Can't wait for some people to discover this one.

855 pm - Dirty Dancing - This is probably the most widely-seen film I'm putting in the line-up, but there's a reason for that. I genuinely maintain that this is one of the best written movies ever. And it also happens to be one of the most infectious. As a kid I basically tried to copy every dance move as I watched... that other plot-line probably went over my head.

1035 pm - Moonstruck - Cher! Olympia Dukakis! Yelling Nic Cage! The moon! I can't wait for people to see this if they never have and also come to understand that this unhinged-yet-perfect movie was somehow a full-tilt Oscar film.

1220am - Midnight Secret Screening #1

1:55am - Late Night Secret Screening #2

Can't wait!

Even though I had to drop out after All that Heaven Allows, I'm still glad I got to see it with y'all! The comments in chat made me think a lot about Hulk's Playboy piece from a few years back (https://web.archive.org/web/20170905162804/http://www.playboy.com/articles/film-crit-hulk-sex-in-cinema).
