I feel Your Name is where he learned to tell a story instead of presenting a series of aesthetic but vague feelings. He deals with themes of love, longing, distance, intimacy, and loss throughout his work, and I feel Your Name is a culmination of his growth as a filmmaker in synthesizing these themes into a narrative. I also feel he grew in his drawings of characters...he's always excelled at backgrounds since his earliest works, but his character designs and expressions in those films fell flat for me. Your Name is where his character designs and animations came to life.
