My work for Polygon last year is coming out, so I'm so happy to bring you this epic piece on Neon Genesis Evangelion and all the thoughts of this complex, harrowing, and fascinating piece of art.

Also, have you watched the recent movies? Recommended? All I've watched is the OG show plus End of Eva. The other movies aren't as accessible for me, so I'm wondering if it's worth the effort to track them down, or if I'm good with having just watched what I've seen

I read this piece when you first posted it but I came back to reread because I'm in that NGE zone again with the fourth remake movie coming to Amazon next month (finally!) Such an excellent read and I loved the bit about how readers need to understand that creators aren't going to address semiotics in interviews. That shit exists for us to explore the meaning, not to be told it. And with your current anime viewing schedule, I wonder if you've heard of Gurren Lagann? It feels like a reaction to Eva in a big way. It's about a repressed fourteen year old boy thrust into the role of saviour of the human race. But in every way that NGE zigs, GL zags. It leans into the power fantasy, and uses it as a meditation on the nature of leadership and power, both physical and political. Same studio as NGE (Gainax) and same creators as Promare (Hiroyuki Imaishi)
