pwyw tarot-style commission for rax! really happy with this-i tried to do a lineless style as well as making any lines i did draw thin and smudged.
i wanted to do something fun with what death means in the tarot-it seems like a very scary card but really it means a great change in someones life. given that the character i was given was a football-fish kind of nautical creature i thought a guiding light to a whale fall would be perfect. rax gave me the idea of a guide and i brought up whale falls. whale falls are when a whale dies and falls to the seabed, it creates a years long banquet and subsequent mini ecosystem around the carcass for millions of undersea creatures of all kinds. the cyclical nature of a great death bringing change and abundance to other creatures is illustrated here-the fish/sharks descending down to the bones of the whale, the kelp, urchins, crabs feeding and growing upward in turn.
