This is a public post, just to give non-members a look at where I'm at currently with the tabaxi mod. As of 3/24/24, I've completed the male and female tabaxi models with caracal, ocelot and black cat texture sets.  The mod is playable, with all of the DnD 5E tabaxi racial bonuses implemented (although due to engine limitations, the Cat's Claws ability currently just gives 2 bonus slashing damage rather than converting the 4d6 bashing unarmed to 6d6 slashing).

Next up will be some more texture options and model improvements, adding some tabaxi-themed objects and tabaxi NPCs to the game world, and finally letting users optionally turn one of the companions- probably Shadowheart- into a tabaxi.

Patrons have access to download and try out the beta version of the mod now, and I'll release the full version publicly on the Nexus once it's complete- which I'm guessing will be in April, or possibly May, assuming the remaining technical hurdles don't turn out to be super easy or crazy hard.

Really great work, I wait female with hype

TrixyTrixter

Looks amazing, I will wait until its done before I use it tho. Only joined to support the mod making for now!

Navier

You are amazing CobaltOwl. we need more modders like you out there. I'd love to learn but I have no clue where to start or how you figure it out to replace models in other games like this. it's all alien to me but I know enough it would take a while to learn all of this. on top of that your models are looking better by each mod that comes out. Easy night and day comparing this to the Xcom2 models. which looked good but this... this looks amazing.

CobaltOwl

Thanks! A lot of games these days have pretty great modding communities with a lot of tutorials to help people get started- for example, BG3 has a wiki of tutorials at: https://bg3.wiki/wiki/Modding:Creating_mods. The best way to learn is just to set a very simple goal like modifying one texture or gameplay element, and follow tutorials and forum suggestions until you can do it, then move on to more complicated goals. Even with the best communities, there will still be times when you hit a brick wall- where nothing seems to work and nobody online seems to know why. But if you're willing to just put on a good audiobook and spend a weekend or two chiselling away at it- trying every possible approach to fixing the issue- the wall will pretty much always eventually collapse, which can be a very satisfying feeling.

Zavity

Will there be a tabaxi tiger or bobcat? I'm so excited for this!

CobaltOwl

I'm going with sort of a small cat theme initially- ocelot, Siamese, standard issue cat, etc. A lynx/bobcat skin would be challenging, since I'd need to make a new model with the long cheek fur- though that's definitely a possibility worth considering; it would add some interesting variety to the options. The initial version of the mod probably won't include big cat skins- although I might add those in later depending on interest.

Goku Smith

Can you change the fur color? Or is that going to be in later editions?

CobaltOwl

I'm working now on some alternate fur textures that will be selectable in the character creator- at least a couple of which should be ready in the next update.

Ryloth

Hi, I just subbed because of what you do. Thanks for this stuff! I try to play tabaxi-like races basically everywhere ... love them! Do you have a donation link like a buy me a coffee or something? BG3 is something I majorly look forward to playing as one of these. :)

CobaltOwl

Thanks! Yes, I have a donation link over at: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/cobaltowl

Forest Ferret

Just subbed because Tabaxi are my favourite D&D race and yours look incredible! Would love a short tail option in the future for bobcat/ lynx types. Amazing work! :)

cheeseguy3412

I am waiting to play Baulders Gate 3 until this mod is further along - I want my first playthrough to be with a Tabaxi :3

Jonathan Howard Bowles

I been trying your mod, so far can't make females, or change appearance even though I have improved ui mod

Jonathan Howard Bowles

same here.. Though doing a power gaming playthrough dark urge atm :)

Mike

here to shamelessly beg for female model types sooner than later lol

CobaltOwl

I've finished the female head and body model, as well as the modified pants models- I now mostly just need to finish up the code changes for all of the game's outfits to support the new models. I think I'll be able to release an update with female Tabaxi some time next week at the latest.

Mike

You're awesome. I literally can't thank you enough for doing Tabaxi. Fantastical Multiverse is amazing, but the lack of kitty is so disappointing. You rock.

CobaltOwl

I'm still working on the female Tabaxi, but the appearance thing may be a bug. Are you able to select the "Edit Character" button for male Tabaxi and change the eye color and hair style?

Mereel

Hey just letting you know if you didn't already, congrats on getting your reddit post stolen for a ScreenRant article! Still super hype for the mod and seem like others are too. https://screenrant.com/baldurs-gate-3-dnd-tabaxi-mod/

Navier

Whaaa it comes out next month?! I don't recall Cobalt saying that.

CobaltOwl

I mentioned at one point that I hoped to release in April- which is still possible, depending on how difficult the Shadowheart and other NPC changes turn out to be, although it may also have to be pushed back to May.

I am SO in love!!! I'm testing and wow this is already fire, even tho it isnt even finished yet

Fox Firestrot

am so excited, cant wait for the female version! any news about it?

CobaltOwl

Very nearly done. I'm just trying to fix a couple of particularly difficult bugs, and should be able to post the female update as soon as those are resolved- hopefully later today or tomorrow.

Sir Southpaw

Love this so far. But I'd it just me ot do the eyes not move? It's a bit uncanny

NetherHyena

if you're gonna be turning Shadowheart into a Tabaxi could we maybe also bother you for turning Karlach into a dragonborn? it kinda sucks we don't have any dragonborn to romance and she's kinda the best character for it

Abraham the Heavy

you can already turn karlach into a dragonborn by using the appearance edit enhanced mod, the problem is that dragonborn characters use different animations than the other races so karlach facial animations get all broken up when you do that

NetherHyena

Yeah i know. you'd think that with there already existing the mouth animations on other dragonborn npcs that it'd work better. i'd just rather romance a furry/scaley and i'm kinda annoyed there isn't a dragonborn companion

William Gerrettie Jr

Absolutely loving being able to play my tabletop Druid Tabaxi in BG3, thank you! IF this mod doesn't change at all you've already made my year. If you do add more options (subraces/breeds) I'd like to humbly suggest Egyptian Mau. This might be impossible but it would be cool if the three chanels for hair color worked on the body hair too.

Alex Dull

I would drop a little extra for a Tiger option

Kris Colwell

Will we be able to make smaller versions if that is a possibility? Not sure if that just means another mod that modifies sizes.

William Gerrettie Jr

I've never used this mod but this is currently available on Nexus; https://www.nexusmods.com/baldursgate3/mods/6838 (Choose Your Size)

WuffyCerulei

How is progress on the mod? No worries if you need more time. This is a whole remodel and whatnot. Just a little worried after not hearing anything for a good while.

Quince

Same, they have no social media presence at all so its hard not to worry when everythings dark

pokemorph

definitely concerned for their well-being.

Mike

Has anyone heard anything? Now I'm getting worried as well.

Anthony Stuart

I'm getting worried too, nothing on reddit, patreon, nexus, FA... I'm not impatient or anything, I'm happy to wait as long as necessary, but concerned now

Natsil

A furry mod on Enshrouded will be really cool XD

IntoTheOlliverse

Any updates? It seems like the last time anyone got a response was 2 months ago. I understand that creating a mod like this must take time, and obviously external circumstances can hinder progress, but its been months without so much as an "I'm still alive/ still working on this" post. I dont want to come off as pushy or impatient or anything, I'm 100% willing to wait as long as it takes, I just want to know if CO is ok and if they are still working/ plan to continue working on this.

CobaltOwl

Thanks for the concern, and sorry again about vanishing- it's been a pretty hard month or two, but avoiding posting anything was definitely not a reasonable way to respond to that. I will keep you guys more in the loop in the future, and hopefully get the next update completed soon.

IntoTheOlliverse

You’re totally fine, don’t worry about it! Like I said I understand life happens, and I just wanted to know if you were ok. Sorry if my comment came off as rude or pushy at all 😅 Thank you again for the update, and for your amazing work!

Pnuemon

Quick question-- do you plan to apply for the closed beta next month for Patch 7's new modding toolkit? It may make the development of BG3 mods a LOT easier-- I think your work in particular would be perfect for testing the new kit. If you do apply, I hope you get accepted into it!
