It was like one of those bugs that kept appearing on iPhones, where you could send a few complicated characters in languages you didn't know existed and the phone would crash. It was purely by mistake he found it when he sent a message to Jon in the cafeteria when they were both fooling around. Whatever he wrote after the sequence Jon simply did, without question. First he thought Jon was still messing around, then he got a bit scared when he realized what was happening, and sent "delete your text history and forget we sent any messages this hour". 

He didn't use the sequence for a few days until he gathered enough courage to experiment.  He used the contact sheet for Alpha Bromega Phi to get test subjects that normally were more likely to haze him than even move aside, if he asked. Once he got comfortable controlling them he tasked them to collect the contact information for the different athletic teams.
