Studio Ghibri was named after the Italian aircraft by Hayao so it is supposed to be called "Giburi" but because Hayao misunderstand the pronounciation of it and it is kinda hard to pronounce "Giburi" as we Japanese, so Studio is officially calling it as "Jiburi". That's why it is written as Studio Ghibri in English but as スタジオジブリ(Su-Ta-Ji-O Ji-Bu-Ri) in Japanese.

FYI, Hayao is a Military(especially WW2) Geek so that's why there are so many reference and fighter jets in the Ghibri movies.

Lowkey you gotta go with the og, Nausicca and the Vally of the wind! It’s my favorite Ghibli and one off my favorite movie of all time! It’s cool, has an awesome world, great story, great music and some badass scenes! It’s not as popular as other ghibli films *cough cough* Spirited away. But it’s a masterpiece and you can start from the beginning of ghibli and see the progression in his works a little better!

If you guys are going to continue with your Studio Ghibli journey, then I recommend watching Princess Mononoke next which a movie I really enjoyed watching as a kid. Also, I would save Spirited Away for last as that's one of the most iconic Studio Ghibli movies, and which won an Academy Award for best animated feature. It is also the second highest grossing anime movie behind Demon Slayer.

This movie is 100% my comfort movie. There's so many fun little details too. Idk if anybody else in the comments has said it but one of my favorite details is near the start of the movie when Sophie is cooking and Howl says "Calcifer you're being so obedient" and calcifer says that Sophie bullied him and howl says "not just anyone can do that." Calcifer is Howl's heart so basically Howl's heart is already listening to Sophie. Same with in the very first scene where Howl saves Sophie from the guards he says "Sorry I'm late Ive been looking everywhere for you." And it's because he literally has been looking everywhere for her ever since the younger him saw her when she traveled to the past. Ugh god I love this movie.

Found family in Howl’s Moving Castle ❤️ My favourite things about the movie are the characters and the world in which they live in. The plot is pretty non-coherent, which is the biggest criticism of the movie (and Miyazaki’s other works). But his movies are more like an experiences that resonate with you. Howl’s Moving Castle is definitely the type of movie you have to rewatch to pick up on the subtle details. I agree that Princess Mononoke should be the next Ghibli movie!

Another pleasant suprise! Howls is such a classic, and I like how it was mentioned how its just such a wholesome movie as well, because ghibli does those sooo well. They really know how to intertwine meaningful messages into their stories while also retaining some semblance of wholesomeness/beauty of the world within it. And I'd be totally down to see any of them really, but also vote princess mononoke for next ghibli movie (its one of my personal favorites too)! Also hoping for weathering with you, in part because of the cameos from your name, but also just cuz its a great movie too~

I haven't seen this one recommended yet, but another amazing Ghibli movie is Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. Top tier movie and it's so slept on. The creatures and world in it make you question if Miyazaki was on something. Also, fun fact, Nausicaa is the first Studio Ghibli movie released in America in 1985. It was released just before the studio's official founding. The first released version was heavily edited, renamed, and cut almost 25 minutes from the original - it also made Miyazaki hesitant to release any more of his works outside of Japan. In 1997, when another director approached Mizayaki with another edited version of the film but with the original title, Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suki sent a Katana sword to the American director's office with "NO CUTS" embedded in its blade. And thus, when the American rights to the film returned to Miyazaki, with Disney's help, the original form of the film - in English dub - was released in America in 2003.

I'm really happy that you liked this movie, especially the strange/fantastic side! And well done for guessing so quickly that Sophie's appearance reflects the way she sees herself, (in some ways it's a journey in search of her self-confidence). All the Ghibli movies were part of my childhood so it makes me so nostalgic (every time I watch the films again, I hear the music,... I get a tear in my eye). Anyway, thank you for that and looking forward to seeing more of your reactions to the Ghibli movies!

It was nice to revisit this movie with y’all! In terms of Ghibli movies I think this was my favorite when I was younger but TBH all the big ones have a very similar quality to them and are more or less equally good! So if you want more, there is definitely more!

My all time favorite!!!! It’s based on a book, the blonde woman is Sophie’s step mom and Lettie is her half sister through her. Sophie really is a witch / has magic the whole time but doesn’t realize until the end. If Addie hasn’t read it yet, the book is hilarious and has the same whimsical vibe. Also has a lot of extra detail, totally recommend!!

I recommend "Castle in the sky" by studio Ghibli. Its Ghibli's first movie and its sososo good. (pls watch it in subbed the voice actor is so good trust me). Aldo ghibli pronounce as ji-bu-li.

all studio ghibli films are amazing! another one that's pretty adorable, if you're just looking for a fun movie with really innocent vibes, is 'ponyo'. as for the pronunciation this put it better than i could have: Ghibli is actually an Italian word, which Hayao Miyazaki had taken from a WW2 fighter plane (the Caproni Ca.309 Ghibli), and is technically pronounced GIB-LEE (like Gibson Guitars). That said, Hayao Miyazaki had only read the word in a book, and didn’t know how it was pronounced, so he pronounced it JIB - LEE (like the word gibberish). In Japanese there is no proper way to pronounce the syllables that make up the word Ghibli, so Japanese people usually say JEE - BUH - REE. Simply though, Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli use JIB - LEE.
