Surprised to see it be dub since it seemed like you guys preferred sub and the poll agreed but either way is fine, just keep subtitles on even with the dub so people can still follow when volume levels get mixed. It is what it is, happy you're watching it at all.

I’m glad you guys are watching in dub, the voices will become natural to you trust me. Sub is good but definitely overhyped for whatever reason, I find it easier to appreciate the animation without having to read everything that’s said so I’m glad your open to the experience

if you can find subs that aren't for deaf people (sorry deaf people but I doubt we have any here) that would be ideal so it doesn't put literally every sound made in brackets in the sub and instead only the dialogue if not then definitely keep this, no sub is unwatchable lol

It might be because I was a lot younger, but I remember the 2003 version of this episode even more dark, either way Nina-Alexander' chimera is a pretty traumatic event that we all need to experience. I'm currently on episode 32 and sooo good, cannot wait for your reactions!!

Honestly at a certain point it's not even about how good the actors are, the dialogue and the way it's crafted is often so npc-like and very unnatural, the pacing of the dialogue too. And this happens purely because it's tranlsated from another language, they have to match the japanese lip flaps into english dialogue so it often has to be crafted in an unnatural way so it can be lip synced properly

Reading the comments, I just love how mature the majority of sub-lovers are. Regardless of the poll, they chose the Dub, which means they kind of wasted our time and effort. I voted Dub for this show because I only saw this in Dud before. But I guess I'll give myself a chance to watch in the Sub. You can definitely imagine this comment would have been a crazy hater comment of the frame if they had chosen Sub. haha

Personally I wouldn't watch a version of the show I dislike more and keep complaining about, especially when it's one of the best anime of all time, but that's just me I guess. The dub isn't as good, for sure. I've watched the entire show in both sub and dub and the former is far superior in terms of the passion and realism that the voice actors brought. But it's still the best anime dub I've ever seen, only the experience is lesser than if one were to watch it in sub.

Not to downplay Brig catching on, but he's seen more anime and the "glasses looking glazed over hiding the character's eyes" is classic anime foreshadowing that someone is hiding something/evil/sus and this episode uses that very early.

It’s just different perspectives ig, I watch dub when I have the choice and don’t really see an impact on the story at all and I don’t have to read subtitles which I prefer. Some people are probably so used to sub which immerses them more that dub makes them cringe so I can understand how it could ruin the show for them

I cannot express how excited I am you guys chose to watch dub. Both dub and sub are top notch and I’m so grateful that the majority of the sub preferers are being so kind about it all, you guys rock. As someone who’s studying linguistics and is deep into the world of translations I think it’s too easy to get caught up in what the best way to experience a story is. A lot of people refuse to watch/read/listen to anything outside of their native language which really is a huge shame. I’m native English speaking but some of my favourite songs are French or Ukrainian or who knows what. But I also think there is a widespread lack of respect for translators. Especially for something like Japanese to English, it’s an insanely difficult task. People will hate on translations while forgetting someone slaves over them to try and preserve as much meaning as possible. This definitely extends to voice actors who give their all to a performance just to be called bad because they had hard material to work with. It’s a monumental task to work with translated material and get all the meaning out even as just the actor. Appreciate the hard work everyone put in to get this into English. Even if it’s not perfect remember it’s easier to catch flaws in your native language and that there’s flaws even in the native one. That’s the fun of it all, none of its perfect but it’s still special no matter how you experience it

From the comments I see they have chosen DUB. For people who are 100% SUB, i understand it, I am like that for literally every other Anime, (NO, ERWINS SPEECH AND CHARGE IS NOT BETTER IN DUB WTF FIGHT ME) but try to give this a go for a few more episodes. When I was forced to watch it dub on other channels, it grew on me pretty quickly and by the episode 10 I could enjoy myself fully.

completely agree. The first time I watched it was in dub, while it is one of the best anime dubs out there, I still think the sub was wayyyy better. I think you guys should switch back to sub and watch an anime that is objectively better in dub as your first dub experience, like Dragon ball Z for example. There is no point getting a worse experience of an amazing show just for the sake of saying you did an anime in dub. There are plenty of animes where the dub is better, save the first run through of dub for one of them.

Love your guys reactions to this episode! I agree with (a lot) of the comments that this anime is one of the better dub experiences, while the sub offers the best FMAB experience. Watch whichever version you guys prefer! - but please keep the subtitles on regardless. Also if you keep watching the dub, do you think it's possible to switch to a version with cleaner subtitles? I do agree that Eds dub voice is kinda jarring, especially when yelling. It is what it is. I think the voice actors otherwise does a great job, however the lines themselves tend to sound a bit unnatural. Though that is a common dub issue and I guess it is hard to avoid (to my knowledge I can only think of the Steins;Gate and Cowboy Bebop dubs doing well in this regard). Regarding the Silent Voice Ueno vs Kawai debate thrown in there, I will say that on my first watch I thought Ueno was the biggest POS by a wide margin, but on my second and third watch I softened ever so slightly on Ueno whilst realising how despicable Kawai is, and yes I now think she is the worse of the two (I could probably write and entire essay on this but I will hold it in :D). I am in no way defending Ueno, she is still a POS, I just think Kawai is worse.

I think they should do what they feel like but you can't act like the chances of them watching the other shows dubbed was anywhere near as high as this. It wouldn't make sense for a dub lover to complain about them not watching AOT dubbed for example. As someone who exclusively watches stuff in its native language, FMAB dub is really good; that's why there's a debate in the first place. So it doesnt matter that they watched the other anime in sub.

If they liked the dub more then all the power to them. It's my favorite anime of all time so I just want people to watch it in the way they like the most so that they can get the best experience with the show. But idk it seems to me like they're forcing themselves to watch a version they don't like nearly as much for external reasons. But there are plenty of mature sub folks who's alright with dub and aren't complaining/whining. I myself is a sub watcher, neither a weeb or entitled despite being bewildered though, I'm cool with them choosing to go with the dub at the end. I won't stand for the King Bradley slander. He's my favorite va in the show. Yes it's a lot different than dub like Ed so you have to get used to it if you have seen sub and have a certain voice associated with him but the hate is crazy give it a chance

The main problem with the dub is that the English VAs are not able to pull off the goofy scenes in the show (in fact, in any show). The humor of this show is classic shounen (not my favorite), but at least the Japanese VAs do it well and hence is tolerable. If I’m not mistaken, anime humor is not the Studio Geks strong suit, so I’m wondering how they will receive the humor in this show in dub. Another point to the sub vs. dub debate- I agree that there are some very good dub VAs, but the OVERALL sub acting is much better than the overall dub voice acting, hence the better overall experience.

I grew up with the dub so it’s nostalgic for me to see them watch it in the dub. But I think the best dub I have ever heard is Ghost In The Shell. The voices sound just like the sub voices.

Isn't there a lot of iterations of ghost in the shell? My brother showed me some thing for anime movies being shown in theaters and ghost in the shell is one of them. I have no idea if it's gonna be sub or dub

There are several iterations. I didn’t know about a new movie, but all the ghost in the shell movies I’ve seen have been sub. The only dub for ghost in the shell that I know of is The Laughing Man and Individual Seven arcs.

This is the anime that got me into anime. I really hope the dub is as good as everyone says, but I’m 100% watching either way! On another note, how many episodes are y’all going to try and put out a week for FMAB? The 1 episode weekend was brutal lol

so, the original series was messy and worse for the most part, not for this part of the story though. in the original the brothers stay with him as they're studying and taking their state alchemist exams(they don't start off as state alchemists). So for the first episodes shou is basicly just the person they live with and he helps them study alchemy. This makes the reveal so much more shocking and surprising as it comes for someone who you thought was going to be a main stay background character like mustang, armstrong, and hughes

Yay DUB, I was hoping u were going to switch to dub from now on. it's so much better understanding the words coming out of their mouths rather than read a shortened translation. Yes they simplify and condense the sub translation as much as possible so u have time to read it. Just sayin. I've watched thousands of subbed episodes but prefer dubs by far.... only go sub if there is no dub

I really wish you guys would watch the shows based on how you'd like to regardless of your viewers. Watching it in a way you don't prefer would definitely taint your experience. Also disappointed you guys are watching in dubbed since I feel that Japanese voice actors/actresses have more range/skill than English ones at this point in time.

Ok, I know this comment is like 8 months old but I completely agree! Despite me preferring FMAB over FMA, FMA just did the early episodes sooooo much better! Particularly the Liore episodes and the Nina episodes. The rest of FMAB is goated though (no hate to the people who prefer the first anime, it’s all just personal preferences at the end of the day)
