The writer of the series initially wanted to kill off Gon. But because he was writing for Shonen Jump at the time, he was pressured into not doing that because it would upset the fans.

If I remember correctly, Alluka appeared in the beginning of the show when portraits of the Zoldyck family were shown, so it is not a character made simply for Gon’s sake.

As far as I am aware, it’s actually because Alluka is trans. She was born male, as were all the Zoldyk siblings, but Alluka identifies as a girl - which is why Killua, the only sibling who cares about her and loves her, is the only one who calls her by those pronouns. The rest of the family use the incorrect pronouns because they don’t care about her as a person (and obviously trans acceptance is still iffy in a lot of parts of the world both irl and in-universe). HxH is well know for being some of the first trans representation in anime and is highly regarded for that fact!
