Calamity has been driven away from the Hyrule Kingdom once and for all. With the power of Princess Zelda and her trusted Knight Link, the two finally put an end to the evil influence that cursed their home. Years have passed now, and rebuilding has taken place. People have gathered together to help one another, and the Calamity that the people faced has become something of a bad dream to many. Though monsters are still a force to deal with, the land of Hyrule has found itself in a time of peace from major conflict. Able to look toward the future for once, many ask the question. Will the land have a thriving Kingdom once again? Or will it simply be left as countryside with small villages that have no more than thirty people within them?

“Link.” Zelda the princess of the once-thriving Kingdom cared not to think about such things. “Link.” Her voice currently was just a bit annoyed. Before her is her trusted Swordman. His blonde hair is disheveled out of its ponytail. He is currently leaning against a stack of hay sleeping away with his sword, The Master Sword, beside him. How he was able to sleep in any location was beyond Zelda though at the very least he made himself look cute. Today the duo was not doing anything dangerous so Link is simply drooling in a comfortable blue shirt with a sun on the side, for bottoms, tan pants, and some brown boots for his feet. “Really now, must you do this…” Zelda sighs at herself. Her voice was calm, with a poshness lacing it from days of having to study how to be a proper noble princess. That time was over one hundred years behind her now but old habits die hard. Today she wears her usual outing clothes. Black leggings clinging to her legs, a blue tunic firmly wrapped around her and some brown boots as well. She even keeps some brown gloves on her hands. Brushing some of her long blonde hair over her shoulder she gives a soft sigh and sits down beside Link. “You’ve always been rather hard to rouse, haven’t you? Even napping for a hundred years and still not satisfied?”

“Mmm…” Link slowly but surely flutters his eyes open. Groggily he shakes his head letting his dirty blonde hair shake out the strands of hay caught in it. “Ugh…” Looking slowly at his side, Zelda faintly smiles at him. “Ahah…” A soft chuckle rolls off Link’s lips in response his head looking down embarrassed. Link was never much of the talkative type. Luckily with certain people his gestures and emotive nature told them what they needed to know.

Resting her cheek in her right-hand Zelda raises an eyebrow. “So. Finally awake from your long slumber Princess?” Link rubs at the back of his neck in response. “Heh, don’t worry I jest.” Zelda puts both hands on her knees and stands herself up dusting off her backside. “Come on then. Remember what today is? You’re to take me to that spring. The one shaped like a heart.” Holding out her hand Link grabs hold of it and she helps him back on his feet. The two were not at eye level though. As usual, Zelda stood a bit taller while Link remained the small swordsman. Regardless of size though Zelda knew his skills were the real thing. “I’m not sure how long it may take to get there. But please, show me the way. Just let me know if we need to set up camp on the path.”

Currently, the two were not at their home in Hateno Village, they were in Lurelin Village. The village is a fishing village along the southeastern coast. The area has several huts with thatch roofs, palm trees dot the beach and it even has a small area where goats are kept as livestock. Link and Zelda had been staying at the Inn, Link just happened to do odd jobs for most of the villagers and just finished up another one before he fell asleep in the hay. Now though, he could do his duty. Pulling his sheath onto his back and tightening it in place Link beckons Zelda to follow. The area Zelda wanted to visit was a place called Tuft Mountain, or more specifically The Lover’s Pond. A small pond that happened to take on the shape of a heart. There was another pond also that is shaped like a broken heart, but Link figured no need to bring that up. Moving up the road to this Pond does not take that long luckily. Even walking it has a road going up to it which is most often safe. Link did not even change to armor, the worse that would happen would be a Yiga Clan member coming out from some hole. Usually, they keep away from Link lately though.

SNAP

“Beautiful…” Zelda stares off dumbfounded as she mindlessly walks. Using the Sheikah Slate for pictures Zelda often made sure to document different plants and animals. Though she also would take pictures of different moments she wanted to remember. “More of these I’ll have to hang up at the house later…You know Link. Purah was actually telling me that she was thinking of making more Sheikah Slates… but she wants to make several, so others can use them. Fewer features but still with the ability to use maps and teleport, even take pictures. Her and Robbie wanted to call it the Purah Pad.”

Slowly Link rubs at his chin nodding. For better or worse Link was never the person to add more to the conversation. Luckily Zelda often just wanted someone to listen to her excited rambling.

“You see, I think it would help us rebuild even the main city of Hyrule.” Clipping the slate back onto her belt Zelda picks up her pace speed walking to Link’s side. “Just think if we could find a way to transport other items like lumber. If we could give them to the Son’s we’d surely be able to build back the kingdom much faster. The population is already starting to grow larger since we’ve had so little conflict.” Rubbing at her chin now Zelda steps a little off the path peering over the edge of the mountain road. “I can only hope this long peace does not bode us a greater disaster… I don’t wish to be negative. But… much of this still feels so unreal. Living a life like this.” Link now steps over to Zelda’s side staring out toward the sea. “People… are slowly beginning to expect things from me. It’s funny. I was a princess. But… with no castle, no city. Why would they even call me a princess I often wonder? If some of the other races were not so long-lived. I feel like Hateno Village would never bother to see me as some symbol of authority. Yet… Purah, Impa, they still expect things of me as well.” Gently Zelda squeezes her hand into a fist turning back toward Link. “Is it… is it foolish of me to say. I never wish to be a princess again. To be a queen? The life we’ve been living now… I’m content enough. The life you and she both live, that’s the life I’ve always wanted since I was young.” Scoffing under her breath Zelda turns on her heel and keeps walking up the hill. This time Link lags behind a bit, keeping close but giving Zelda space. “You remember it, don’t you? The ceremony so long ago… I never even wanted to wear the dresses Father would give me. Yet it was expected as a future ruler. To govern the people. Make policies. Help the economy. To converse with the other race's rulers. I was supposed to be a connecting force. One that brought, Rito, Goron, Zora, and Gerudo together. Without me would there be a proper voice for the Hylians?” Letting the sentence linger in the air Zelda walks silently for several minutes. “Link. Anyone could lead the Hylians. The mayor of Hateno, Impa, you, anyone can learn to lead. Yet as soon as I returned everyone called me Princess once again. It feels so… silly. Though… I apologize. I don’t mean to complain so much about this. Just when I woke up from that long time being sealed away with that thing. I thought I could finally lead the life I wanted without anything holding me back. The things I like to do though, even now I’m still being dragged away from them. Simply because I was educated as a leader.”

Link is indeed a man of few words. Though he did not need them. Walking up to Zelda he gently places a hand on her back and she shivers a little in place from the touch. Nodding his head at her, he points to the pond that was now before them. Calming water shimmers lightly in the light. The shape of a heart. The sun was just starting to dip down too. The soft red of the dusk makes Zelda’s eyes shimmer the same. Then, purple lights begin to flutter from the surface of the water. Fairies flying slow and steady. They were like insects to some. Fluttering creatures that lit up like fireflies. Though Zelda and Link both knew the powers they held. Regardless, the sight was beautiful.

“Flowers. Water… Fairies too.” Zelda stares mesmerized by the colors. Purple from the fairies, a soft red from the water reflecting the dusk, yellow, blue, and white from the wildflowers surrounding the pond. Walking to it slowly Zelda was not sure what to think or say. “I must… I must paint this someday.” Though she was not one to make art, she did need to learn how to draw in the past. Another part of her royal schooling. “I’ve only just laid my eyes on it. Yet I know I’ll return in time.” The view did calm Zelda’s heart it even had a nice warmth to it. “Wait… hm?” Turning on her heel to look back at Link. The heat was coming from a fire. Zelda only looked away for a moment and somehow Link had already set up a fireplace and even had sleeping bags placed down. A table was surprisingly placed down too wherever he managed to find it. It was one of Link’s odd features Zelda thought. Somehow he always seemed to have any item he needed on hand at all times like he had storage she could not see. “Well. I should have figured you’d set things up. I was just about to ask if you’d be alright camping here the night.”

Link gives a simple thumbs up and shoves a stick into the ground close to the fire. A rather large fish is already on it. Another part that Zelda did enjoy about Link. Sometimes he would eat strange things, but when cooking for her he always made rather amazing food. “Aaaah…” Letting out a long sigh Link plops his butt down on the sleeping bag and looks to the fire and fish. His eyes then move to Zelda, his hand moving through the air to point at the other bag.

“Oh.” Zelda nods and grabs at her long blonde hair walking over to the sleeping bag. “Just one moment…” Tying her hair up into a high ponytail she sits herself down on the sleeping bag looking back at Link now. “I suppose I’ll be interested to see what you cook us this time. While you do that though. I shall look over some of the pictures I’ve taken.” Link gives a powerful nod in response telling Zelda all she needed to know. “Sounds delicious. I look forward to it.” Looking down she now brings up the Sheikah Slate once again and begins scrolling through the different pictures on it. “I suppose some of these I can delete for the new ones…this one I can keep. Oh actually.” Staring at one picture for some time Zelda clicks on it with her finger to enlarge it. “That’s interesting…” The picture was one Zelda had no memory of taking, and it was between her photos from earlier when she was taking pictures of the mountains view. “This looks like Sheikah Language… the area looks like a room. I was never here.” Zelda mumbles to herself pondering, all while Link shovels different food items into a pot a little away from her. “I think I think I can make it out… it says… what does it say. Yes, yes it says. From Wisdom comes courage, so courage than can gain wisdom.

POP

Zelda suddenly hears nothing. A small pop went off and now everything is simply frozen. “What?” Speaking aloud Zelda listens to her voice echo as if in a cave. Looking over to Link he is frozen in place, a rock in his hand about to be thrown into the cooking pot. “Has… has time stopped?”

It is faint but Zelda can hear it in the air. Faint whispers brush against her ear. “You wish for it. Don’t you?” Zelda could not tell if the voice was male or female but it was something. An airy voice that had no form and no location. She looks over her shoulder, looks toward Link, and looks to the air. Nothing was around her but the voice keeps speaking to her. “All you need to do is start the process, then you will gain the freedom you have always desired.” Zelda takes a calm long breath and looks back at her slate. The picture on it had now changed again. This time the changes were obvious the image was completely different. Pressing the button on the slate the image zooms in and Zelda can make out both herself and Link standing side by side. They looked different than normal though, the picture was not very clear. They both also had odd symbols on their hand, and their hands were held together. “All you need to do, is grab his hand, and exchange the powers you both hold. The rest will happen on its own.”

TING

The rock falls into the cooking pot and Link begins to stir the pot with a wooden spoon. Time had started to move once again though Link had not noticed it froze. Zelda takes another short breath and stretches herself out. “Mmm… Just what was that.” Zelda was always one to wonder, part of her wanted to test right away to see if anything happened if she grabbed Link’s hand. Maybe it was just some odd way for them to interact in front of the lover's pond. “I don’t think any god would be that assertive would they…?” Softly mumbling to herself Zelda could not wrap her head around what she had just dealt with. The only thing she knew now was curiosity. “Exchanging our powers… Link is the only one that can wield her. Would that mean he would gain powers like I have… and I would gain the ability to wield the sword?” Taking a careful step forward she wished to test. The food that Link was making also smelled strangely good even though she had witnessed him throwing a rock into it. “Link. I must ask you something.” Link turns his head to Zelda and gives a faint smile turning his head in question. “You see Link. I wish to test something.” Link does not even blink staring, it seemed he was ready for anything as always. Zelda bites at her lip for a moment. What if the words of the voice did not matter or were literal to a fault? Zelda was thinking about the power exchange, but it also said she could have the freedom she desired. To finally not have to be the princess of the kingdom. To just be a normal person and be able to do the things she loves without everyone always hindering her and asking her to resolve problems and start new projects. Sure, she liked helping people but she did not care to keep having so much pressure on herself constantly. “I-I…. I was wondering. “Was it really okay to ask anything of Link if any of the words the voice said were true? “I was wondering. If I might have your palm for a moment?”

Link simply shrugs and holds out his right hand to Zelda. Just as told by the disembodied voice Zelda places her right palm on top of Link’s. His eyebrow raises but she says nothing she simply focuses on the power she has. The power of light within her that can help seal darkness. It is much like the sword Link wields but the sword is more compacted while her power is more of an outward force. The outward power would be how she would channel it to someone else then? Link’s hand quivers a little and a gasp escapes his lips. “Hah?!”

Zelda blinks, unable to believe her own eyes. Both she and Link’s hands were glowing a gentle light. On her hand part of a triangle was highlighted, same for Link’s. “Unbelievable. Does that mean it will really work?” Closing her eyes, Zelda did not want to believe it would be so simple. But Link was not in pain, neither was she. It would not be so bad to at least try. “Mm-mm…just… just going to try something so stay still Link.” Squeezing her eyes shut Zelda focuses her power. The triangle then shines a brighter white light in turn. Zelda was not sure how it would all work but her mind focuses on swapping the symbols into the other's spot. With just a few passing seconds, the light fades. “There!” Gasping out her words Zelda reels her hand back and stares at her softly glowing hand. The symbol had moved. Her small triangle had moved to where Link’s once was. “It really worked… I feel different already.”

Link blinks a few times and looks at his hand. “Eh?” Pointing at his hand it looked to Zelda like he wanted some kind of answer.

Swallowing back spit Zelda’s eyes slowly avert downward like she had done something wrong. “Well. I… I well. You see our powers have been exchanged is all. You can do what I could. I can do what you could. Is I suppose how it works.” Zelda nods to herself a bit more confident. “Yes. That must be it let us see it at work!” Grabbing Link’s sword from the hilt she unsheathes it right away and holds it up toward the night sky effortlessly. “O-Oh my.” Already she could barely believe it, her arm strength was stronger. That was not something she thought would change. The sword then flashes and her grip around it tightens. Though none else could hear the voice of the sword she could, and she felt the need to respond to it. “I-I assure you he won’t be hurt.”

The swords glow fades out and things seem to calm. Link and Zelda share a few glances but without much understanding of the full situation Link simply offers some of the soup he made. The two eat, Zelda takes a few more pictures, and they camp the night away at Lovers Pond. Then morning comes once again.

Chrip, chrip, chrip

Link is the first to get up as usual. Stretching out his arms he lets a long morning yawn leave his lips. “Aaaaah… morning.”

Zelda blinks awake as soon as she hears Link. Jolting up from her sleeping bag she crawls over to him grabbing his shoulders. “What did you just say?!”

Link’s head turns slowly and he shrugs. “Morning?”

Zelda nods in kind looking flabbergasted from the blunt response. “This…this may have done more than I would have hoped.” After the events of last night, Zelda put the sword back in its sheath, it was sitting beside Link even now. “Then she’s fine… but.” Zelda’s eyes squint now staring Link over again. Something was off, not just him being more verbal. It looked like he was slightly taller. Or she was smaller. “No… no, it’s both. I’m shorter and you’re taller.” Biting at her lip Zelda stands herself up and dusts off her leggings. “Let us break camp… we…we should get back to Hateno for now. I would very much like to see what else may happen.” Pursing her lips sheepishly Zelda’s eyes peer away from Links. “Also… you should avoid using your sword on the way back. You may find it does not work correctly. For now, other weapons will do just fine. I know you’re accustomed to it.”

Link gives a simple nod and the two of them break camp. Starting their long walk back home time seemed slower somehow. “Zelda.” Each time she heard Link say just a simple word it was already more than she expected. Though their walk back was without issue. Hateno was not that far from the mountain. Though it did still take the whole day. Getting back into the village; night had already fallen. Only the glow of mushrooms from Cece’s new craze lit the village road. However, finally, Zelda pushes open the door of her home and sets her bags near the entrance. Link does the same and the two fall to their seats at the main table of the house. Another night would tick away. For now, Zelda had nothing left to ponder over. She gives Link a wave and gets herself ready for bed. Another day was waiting for them.

BANG

A loud thud sounds and Zelda covers her mouth quickly seeing a woman fall to the floor in front of her. “N-no…” Stuttering softly under her breath Zelda could see the word woman was not correct. “Link?”

Link rubs at his eyes and then his tailbone. Brushing a hand through his shoulder-length hair he sighs. “Yeah? Ah…” Link responds but his eyes slowly shift down. His bare chest, the usual bare chest that he had shown off maybe too many times to some people. It had breasts, subtle breasts, but breasts. What is more, muscles appeared less refined. The six-pack abs he once had were more like three-packs. “Ah… this. Not. Right.” The words come out slowly and one at a time. Though Zelda very much agreed with them. On the other hand, she was curious herself. Lifting her shirt slowly she bites at her lip. She could see it, a three-pack of her own. She had no abs. Sure she did squats to keep up leg strength but not like she swung around heavy swords. In her case, too the breasts she had were now a bit smaller than normal. It was like she was a growing teen instead of a full-grown adult.

Scooting herself off the bed in her white night gown Zelda brushes her long blonde hair over her shoulder. “This is so very odd.” Brushing her hand through her hair slowly she begins to notice a few subtle differences in it as well. Streaks of a darker blonde, much like Link’s own. “Hold out your palm once more Link.” He does as told and Zelda places her palm on his. Though now no mark shows or glows, nothing happens. “Th-this can’t be. If I’m correct though, it appears like we’re trading places. Rather completely.” Link turns his head confused but Zelda, while blushing, points to her chest and then Link’s. “It seems like this is somehow making you a woman… and I believe it is making me a man. Turning into one another. Exchanging our roles fully.”

Link still looked confused though his hand gently touches against his new breast. It was very clearly a female trait he could not deny that. His body also was becoming weaker, he became taller too. Something was happening. “What… now?”

Zelda lifts her slate once again and starts flicking through it. “There has to be something in here… it. It seemed to trigger the change in the first place. Maybe it had some hidden feature?” Flicking through more and more settings Zelda does note a new button on the touch screen. “It looks like a triangle. Much like the one that appeared on our hands… Maybe this would work?” Pressing the button, the slates camera flickers and it begins to vibrate. “Oh my!” Zelda drops the slate and it clatters to the ground camera face up. From the slate then extends up a metal arm. The metal is a darkish blue and black with an orange tint much like the usual devices from the Shekia. This arm holds the eye of the camera and looks between Link and then Zelda. “What is it? I never expected the slate to hide even more secrets.”

The arm then splits down the middle becoming two separate arms. Both of which shoot out toward Link and Zelda. Grabbing onto both of their wrists the arm uses the three-prong hand to clamp itself in place. Link tries to grab it and make it release them but it does not budge. “U-ugh, s-strange.” Gritting his teeth Link feels a sharp pain in his wrist, Zelda too lets out a whine falling to her knees from the sudden pain. The arms suddenly then combine back together letting go of the two. It even retracts itself back into the slate. “Huh?”

Link’s confusion made sense, Zelda had no idea what was going on either. The device emerged and retreated right away. Rubbing at her wrist though she could see a little prick, like a needle had poked her. “What was that strange device… If the process already started. What was it used for? To keep those unwilling from running?” Muttering to herself Link is the one to cover his mouth now, hand pointing at her in awe. “What is it Link? It’s not like you to react so fl—” Zelda cuts herself off and jumps back in place. A pile of hair was under her. Grabbing at her hair at her sides she watches it fall through her fingers. Her hair was falling right from her head. The clean bright blonde falls to the ground leaving a dirty washed-out blonde in its wake. Link’s usual color, even Link’s usual length. “I had been thinking about cutting my hair shorter but I had not expected to get it cut like this.”

Link on the other hand was dealing with the opposite problem. His hair was flaring out over his shoulders. The roots of his hair streak with bright blond destroying what traces of the old color were left. Longer, and longer the hair extends out. Link grabs it and can barely hold it all as it taps against his backside and grows even a bit past it. “A-ah long.” Link wobbles a little from the sudden growth but it luckily stops at Zelda’s usual length. Not tied up or brushed it was a bit of a mess currently.

Zelda silently hoped the changes would stop right there, but it seemed whatever the device did sped up the process even quicker. Her chest begins to tighten up. Squeezing her arms to her center she feels her breasts flatten. Instead, a tight chest is present chiseled and refined. “O-Oh my.” Something in her throat was also starting to bother her like it was getting harder for her to form complete sentences for some reason. Brushing her fingers against her abs though, she could feel how they already gained their full strength. A pair of six-pack abs that felt like she could grate Hateno cheese against them. She really needed to talk to the mayor about that recipe too but— no. Those types of thoughts are what the old Zelda… No, they are what Zelda would be thinking about. “It… It’s all real.” Brushing her hand again against the abs she slowly bunches up the nightgown and slides her hand against her thigh feeling between her legs. “Everything… changing.” She was becoming Link in body completely. One ball forms, then another, a sword of his own. Zelda was no longer a woman, Zelda was a man, Zelda was Link. A Link that was currently wearing a nightgown but Link nonetheless. “I can’t believe.” Swallowing back spit, the real Link was still changing too. What would any of this mean, could they even change back? The taste of freedom was so strong Zelda had not even thought if there would be a way to go back.

THUD

Link once again falls on her butt. Yes, her butt was rather round and soft now too. It was toned to a degree but Link could not feel much muscle in other places. Her arms were even a bit squishy and rather pale white. Pretty common for a princess. “This. This is most unexpected.” Link says all the words and both she and Zelda pause hearing them. Her voice sounded like Zelda’s now. Not even Zelda’s voice had changed completely yet. “Oh wow.” She could seem to speak more at once now as well. Standing herself up her cheeks begin to blush noticing the now rounder breasts bouncing from her light movements. Her breasts had gotten a bit bigger, Zelda was not exactly the most endowed girl but for a guy having any breasts at all was already a different experience. “E-even here has changed?” Link looks to Zelda and he simply nods in kind. Both of them were doing their surefire check, putting a hand between their legs. “It… it really has!” Link takes a jump back herself feeling her chest sway again. “A-ah.” Covering her breasts with both her arms she slowly walks to the bed pulling the sheets up around her. “What… what do we do?”

Zelda was not exactly sure how to answer. Link looked just like her now, though seeing the new girl sit so shyly covering herself did make for a rather cute scene. “Hehe.” Zelda softly giggles under his breath, his voice finally starting to sound a little deeper. Link did look cute being shy, but they did have a very serious issue before them now. “I’m… not.” Zelda pauses finding it hard to complete his sentence. “Mmm. Unsure.” He nods confidently to the answer and picks the slate back up. “Purah?” Link nods in confirmation. The only one that could help them was a genius with knowledge of technology so they may as well ask the source of it within the kingdom. “For. Now.” Zelda takes a few long pauses between words and points over to his closet. “Dress.”

Several weeks later

No one could have known what would happen after the Calamity. Though peace seemed to greet the land. Princess Zelda the kind and beautiful princess stood among the people and lead them in rebuilding efforts. Schools, new homes, better roads, she governed like a true ruler of people. Even the Gorons, Zora, Rito, and Gerudo helped in the efforts to rebuild the land. No one knew what triggered it exactly but Zelda was acting more like a ruler than ever before. Standing atop the newly rebuilt castle in her lovely royal blue dress. She was acting as a new queen to the people. Hand outstretched before the waves of people cheering for the newly built town around the castle. They had come a long way. Even Zelda’s precious Knight of the Wild stood by her side with a smile on his face.

“People of Hyrule. The Calamity has passed. Whatever we may face next. We shall face together with all the strength of Hyrule!” The People cheer at the princess's straightforward speech. She had a way to stir people even with just a few words.

“Heh.” Link on the other hand takes a few steps back from the spotlight so to speak and leans up against the stone walls. Looking at his sword it blinks a few times with a pale glow. “Well. He seems. To enjoy. The new position.” Pulling up his hood Link walks down the hall as the cheers of the people slowly soften. Looking out toward the railing of the opposite end of the castle he gives a faint smile. “I enjoy mine.” Running forward Link jumps over the edge of the railing and pulls his glider aloft letting the winds lead him off to another adventure, just as Zelda had always desired. “I’ll be. Your Link.”
