I know I'm just running away from the text at this point but the visceral slugfest with no commands here reads to me like the moves you'd teach them in game are essentially little stunts or tricks? Like this is what actual peak combat is like. "Hyperbeam? I'm not trying to wear them out, I'm trying to kill them."

Yeah, I was thinking of it kind of like, this has progressed beyond anything that resembles a trainer battle to two animals just trying to kill each other. I think the Nidoking has some tame-animal semblance of “I have to protect my human” but the Gyarados is just on a rampage. I know Pokémon battles as a concept break down if you put them under too much scrutiny because it’s just monster dogfights, but I guess if trainers are doing anything it’s teaching them to fight with finesse and restraint, so every gym isn’t dealing with a situation like this all the time.

Odd choice for a compliment, but I like how I can identify organs like the lungs in this. It just adds to the visceral 'oh my god, he really got torn in half'

Years ago I saw someone complain that comic artists always draw people like garbage bags full of intestines, so I try to add some more identifiable organs and lumps of fat and flesh and stuff in there if I’m drawing something getting eviscerated.
