On this edition of our cartoon recap show, we're chatting about the long-forgotten animated adaptation of a beloved live-action property, Return to the Planet of the Apes!

The episode in question, "Flames of Doom," originally aired back on September 6, 1975, and features some of the cheapest, but trippiest animation we've seen in a while! How funny is it every time the script repeats the names, "Bill," "Jeff," and "Judy"? Why couldn't they have gone a different direction than just MORE astronauts crash landing on the planet of the apes? And how many people out there remember the terrifying children's program, Pappyland? GULP! PLUS: An update from after this episode was recorded, yes, indeed, Andrew has now watched every single episode of this apes cartoon!

Thanks so much for being so awesome and supporting We Hate Movies on Patreon! Please be sure to spread the word! Your support is what keeps this operation going! We know you have a number of choices for podz and we appreciate you spending some time with us!

For Andrew, better toon time experience in it's entirety -- all 22 episodes of STAR TREK: THE ANIMATED SERIES? Or, all 13 episodes of RETURN TO PLANET OF THE APES? Safe travels, to you & the guys, from the Lone Star State!

Whoa Jeff is Austin Stoker from Assault on Precinct 13

Kevin Lynch

You gotta love a cartoon that opens with people crucified upside down in the intro. The episode where they meet the psychic mutants from Beneath is goofy fun

After just watching this for the 1st time, it looks like it was drawn by Jack Kirby if Jack Kirby's hands were broken by a Vegas loanshark.

Steve manifested a show into existence like Candle Cove. Papyland never existed on May 14th, and now we all know about it, by June he'll be president

I really enjoy any time Andrew angrily calls the other guys "apes"

Damon LeCornu

This gen x does not eat cereal, thank you very much.

Kennieth Miles

My grandma knew Pappy's wife! I loved that show!

Busiris

Between the few new monkey/ape-related movies out, this episode, and the Beneath episode coming later this month, I'm loving APE-ril 2.0 (in May, but whatever).

Matt

"Yappin' About Pappy" coming soon to the Walsh, somehow

Paul

I have a not-so-bold prediction: John Krasinki’s “If” will be a stay-tuned in January.

Andrew McCoy

Used to watch Pappy before school every morning. And Bob Ross when I got home

Kevin Matthews

I think I have this series in the ape head boxset I own. I must check it out some time, for better or worse.

Erin Hardy

What are the odds? Yesterday, FB suggested a video from a channel that seems to be SVU episodes edited down to 10 minutes or so, and it was the one with the hat sniffing pedo.

Ajax

A good looking motion comic!

Johnny Wrong

Imagination Station with Mark Kissler was the superior public television drawing program

Gino Volpe

It may not be germane to AD, but I would kill to hear an AD on Pappyland.

wehatemovies

TOS, if only because I have a soft spot in my heart for Filmation productions. But honestly? Spark up and check out that Apes series in its entirety. It GOES places! - Andrew

wehatemovies

Yes! I totally forgot to mention that on the episode. He also played "MacDonald" in Battle for the Planet of the Apes! - Andrew

The blessed return of Andrew’s “MUNkey” 💖 it so much

Not the Black Jobs

I’ve watched the entire series a few times now bc of AD. I low key really enjoy it. Game: Drink every time someone says “monster bird” and take a puff from your vape every time they say “Usa”. It’ll be a good time 😂
