Hey gang, hope you all got your Monsterverse hats on, because we're heading back into it this weekend! That's right, after a month filled with war on Arrakis, pandas doing Kung Fu, nuns getting pregnant, and Ghostbusters finally moving back to New York, we have ourselves another slobber-knocker at the box office as Godzilla and King Kong tangle (and team up?) in the all-new Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire! Wow, two weekends in a row we have big movies with 'Empire' in the title—weird!

Anyway, yes, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire opens up a few years after we had 2021's Godzilla vs. Kong and, if you're like me, you're beyond ready to get stupid once again at the movies! I'm a big monster movie fan, kaiju stuff especially, and while I think this new series from Legendary has strayed way far off from the way things were set up in 2014's Godzilla, I'm still on board with how ridiculous these keep getting.

The review embargo on this sucker didn't lift until the day before release, so if you're one of those people that still thinks reviews effect box office appeal for movies like this, well, they definitely won't this time around, that's for sure.

Important to keep in mind that the month has also been dominated by films that cater to the exact audiences this film caters to, males under 40 and kids, so there's a possibility of burnout there. There's also more NCAA action this weekend, so there could be some folks out there with something else to do!

The tracking for this film is putting its opening weekend gross somewhere between $51M - $65M with most forecasts have it around $62M. We'll see how things go this weekend, especially with most schools either being closed or having half-days today heading into the holiday weekend. Will Godzilla and Kong, much like the Lord Jesus himself, rise once again and top the box office? Or will these two members of Monster Royalty stay dead in the cave behind the big stone?

Vote now in this week's poll and see how things shake out this coming Monday on On-Screen Live!

Have a great weekend at the movies, y'all! - Andrew

This movie is putting all of its money on the hope that people confuse it for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes- another CGI monkey movie that will mostly be seen advertised on non-recyclable fountain soda cups that people will drink while watching a different movie at the theater.

Dan Koss

Godzilla has pink spikes this time though, so that's cool.

Frank Grimes

saw it last night, and while it wasn't exactly a packed house, it wasn't empty either. I'll say one thing, Minus One had much better development of characters, while in this, I was begging they'd get to the Kong/Godzilla parts.

John Locke

Hard pass on anything in currently in the theaters

I dunno about your police work there, Lou. These Monsterverse movies are massive. I feel like you’ll be hard pressed to find someone who’s confusing it with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, and certainly no executives are hoping for that. People know what this is, it’s just a question of whether or not they want more of it. - Andrew

Pass on anything and everything in theaters, huh? Hmm. What’s the next movie you’re looking forward to out of curiosity? - Andrew

I'm going with $59-65 mil because I hope this does as well as projected. I love any kaiju stuff (Godzilla 98 aside) but I think the trailer for this looks stupid as hell.. HOWEVER, I want it to succeed because I want more. I hope it doesn't suck. I work weekends, so I won't be there til Monday but I think people will be into it. GvK did well coming out of Covid, so this should do well too

Clarity Morrison

I choose to believe that the people hunger for silly kaiju movies.

Godzilla x Kong: Dawn of Justice

Leesha Olivier

I have a few students (middle school) who are very hyped for this.

Blake Rea

I think it's going to do well, but not amazing. A lot of people hungry for more after Minus One will go, even if it's a very different movie.

Adam Lewis

He was a king in the world he knew! But he comes before you in a carpal tunnel orthopedic device!

RIP Louis Gossett Jr. Godspeed, Chappy. 🫡

Picking 51-58 only for a couple hunches: Between Ghostbusters and Kung-Fu Panda, the kids being out may keep those big enough to funnel some of who may have seen this into those and Dune 2 still being in the running may sap it too. Then again my hunches have been shit lately so big capsule of salt :P

Dan Koss

I may or may not have been projecting my own fatigue over CGI monkey movies.

DMAC

I just don't know how to feel about the Godzilla + Kong movies. I love Godzilla yet I don't think Kong is in the same league. Then again I have never been a Kong fan as much as a Godzilla fan. Hopefully this movie does well at the box office though.

Sarah Montgomery

Straying from the 2014 Godzilla was the best thing this series has done. Screw the humans. Let. Them. Fight!

Busiris

I have my fingers crossed for at least modest success. I'm rooting for this franchise and I hope they keep it going, if anything at least for another season of the Monarch show and more kaiju nonsense.

Vincent Guereca

Kong's Bowling Brace FTW: $66M or Higher

Ajax

I love these stupid movies so I hope it makes enough for another sequel.

Tim O'Connor

Apparently it did $75mil opening weekend, so congrats to Team Bowling Brace 🦎🦍

Frank Grimes

i severely underrated what this would do, lol. 75-80 mil...nice one, Kong.

Robert Walton

I used to be able to guess box office totals pretty accurately for the big releases but post-covid I am way off a lot of the time.

Daniel Hood

Welp, that was sure a surprise

Can we please put a moratorium on the following topics: CGI, franchises, reboots, legasequels, intellectual property, and anything that purports the past was better in any way. The past was bad. I was there. It sucked. In 2044 you will all keep saying that 2024 was great. You are giving into nostalgia, which is a toxic impulse that only tells you lies. Today is also bad, but don’t tell yourself the past was better.
