Testing out the Blue Snowball Mic (Patreon)
Content
I've had this Blue Snowball kicking around for years and I've wanted to try it out for different. Let's see what it sounds like!
As suspected, this microphone is really good at picking up certain sounds. But it's such a strange design.. an omnidirectional microphone that is designed to be spoken to (it's a "Podcasters" mic) from the front yet it has an open back that will pick up lots of ambient noise. Like.. what?
If you were to use place this microphone on your desk and use it, it would capture, well, basically everything. The keyboard, mouse, computer fans, etc.
It's ideal setting is probably a silent room but even then, if you were doing an interview or something, the other person would bleed into the mix because the back of the mic is open! I really can't figure out who their target user was when the designed this thing.
But enough about the microphone. I wanted to show you this screenshot because you can some of the micro-editing I do to the audio.
With pro-level tools, you can use a Compression effect that brings up the low (quiet) sounds and keeps the high (loud) sounds from being too high. It has the effect of making the recording easier to listen to since there's fewer "peaks" and "valleys" in the track.
What I did here is listen to the track very closely and used volume swells and things in places I thought would enhance the asmr. Some sounds are very shrill so I bring the volume down leading up to the sound to take the edge off, and then increase the volume back to normal.
The funny thing is, I specifically said I wouldn't do this in the video yet here I am doing it 😂. You guys don't understand though; the plastic bag sounds were really loud and I just can't abuse your ears like that haha.
Anyway, hope you enjoy this one as we prepare for June!
