What is love to you?

Comments

Tyler Owens

Yeah the whole point about love is one that’s easy to misunderstand. The priest says that love is unconditional and that because humans fail to love unconditionally, our preference for one another is discrimination. That true love is giving wholly of yourself indiscriminately, something we humans cannot do until death. “Death perfects a person”

Thank you! I have a question: Does the priest imply that he rather humans die than live, because humans cannot love the way he sees fit? I think part of my hard time understanding was the thought of this time period, the brutal, harsh time period of those days. And so this brings him to think that death perfects a person.

This was THE defining episode of the season for me personally. Almost like a religious experience. Never felt anything remotely similar in other anime before. Not to say that it doesn't get better from here, though. I think the priest wasn't diametrically opposed to human life, but just that almost every human he's seen operates by his definition discrimination rather than his idea of some all-encompassing love. When the Atli brothers recalled Thors' words in front of him, he was visibly shaken by the fact that there was someone else who was also onto his idea of non-discriminatory love.
