For anyone interested in learning more about the lives of Blithe and his fellow BoB servicemen, I highly recommend reading ‘A Company of Heroes’ by Marcus Brotherton

Took me this many episode to have my brain click on the actor playing Donald Malarkey, Scoot Grimes. I only know him has Lt. Gordon Mallory in The Orville and now just learn he's the voice of Steve Smith in American Dad. Face Palming hard.

I haven’t seen either of them, so if it makes you feel better, you got it before I did! 😅

Earl Smith

So Blithe's temporary blindness could be a result of head trauma taken from the drop, the eye issues he was having could be a symptom of it. Also he didn't die as a result of his wound, he went home and died much later but the others had lost contact with him and thought he died of his wounds.

Not only did Blithe not die, but he served for the entirety of his adult life. He served in combat in Korea as well and was awarded a total of three purple hearts, three bronze stars, and a silver star. He died in 1967 of a perforated ulcer while still serving in the Army on active duty. He was a Master Sergeant at that point, which is the second highest enlisted rank in the Army.
