I think the mother meant that she made it so they couldn't *kill* each other, and that was the extent of it because they can punch each other and bleed. When Jacob was first introduced, he was making thread to use in his tapestry art. When Ben and fake Locke find Jacob to kill him, he tells them that it takes a long time to make the thread, but that he supposed that is the point in making a piece of art. I think Jacob was referring to whatever plan he set in motion by letting himself be killed by Ben. He can lengthen the lifespan of Richard, and he can make it so Michael, Jack and likely the rest can't kill themselves, until their purpose is fulfilled. When Locke was thrown from the window, Jacob touched him and seemed to bring him back. So all the survivors of the plane crash, of the shipwrecks, everyone surviving insurmountable odds against death, they got to live because Jacob can manipulate their lifespans like he did with Richard. Jacob is like the Greek Moira of Fate, one creates the thread, another one sets the length, another one cuts it. So my theory is that like the Mother he can set it so one thread of life does not cut off another. The numbers in the cave would represent the individual threads within his master plan represented by the tapestry, to carry out whatever scenario he is seeking.

Lastly, remember how Desmond turned the key in the hatch, and we see a very bright light. Desmond, Locke and Eko somehow appear "teleported" out a short distance away from it and avoided the implosion/explosion. When Ben turns the wheel specifically, he is teleported directly to the other side of the world, in Northern Africa. Here, the nameless brother's body is teleported to the cascade pond. That dark smoke entity might be his consciousness or whatever was in his "heart" upon his body's death, whatever makes him "him" unable to leave the Island or truly die.

This is a polarizing episode. But it answers a lot of questions and actually continues a similar theme for Lost villains. It makes villains look irredeemable, but later on shows that there's more to the story than we originally thought (like Jin, Sawyer, and Ben).

Part 1) 46:30-46:35 I understand it's very confusing at first. Let me see if I can help you put the pieces together. >"Mother" was crazy, but she was right. As she pointed out, the light of the island needed to be protected and if it went out on the island, it would go out everywhere (one of those "end of the world storylines"). >But she didn't trust the average human being to protect the light, because humans are corrupt, manipulative, selfish, dishonest, etc. So she intentionally took the 2 boys Jacob and MIB as babies and raised them to listen to her and follow her instructions. >Her point was proven right about humans and the light multiple times throughout the show -In season 5, the Dharma Initiative tried to tamper with the light for their research. Putting lives in jeopardy for their own personal gain. As a result, they nearly all died and they had to create the Hatch/Button to discharge the electromagnetism every 108 minutes. -In season 2, Desmond took too long to push the button. As a result, Oceanic 815's plane crashed. -Locke, in the season 2 finale, nearly ended the world as a result of not pushing that button like Eko told him to -Desmond, turned the key, further tampering with the light. As a result, his entire brain started moving through time and now he's being used by Charles for experiments due to his experience with electromagnetism -In season 4, when Ben turned the donkey wheel to move the island (further tampering with the light), the characters started moving through time. So if these were the results of people "tampering with the button" imagine the results of the entire light going out. As Mother predicted, ordinary people would constantly put the light and the fate of the universe in danger. Because it's in our nature to not listen and do things that we aren't supposed to do.

Part 2 Jacob isn't bad-he's flawed. He made mistakes. He had blind faith in his mother. He created the murderous smoke monster. He had anger problems and beat up his own brother. But he's definitely not "evil" or "bad" by any means. And he wants to prove to other people (and ultimately himself) that flawed people can change for the better. Case in point why he chose these candidates. -Jack is always obsessed with fixing things. -Kate murdered her father in cold blood -Sawyer is a con man -Jin is a hitman -Sun cheats on her husband -Sayid is a torturer -Ben is a manipulator and liar -Locke is blinded by his belief in "faith" and "destiny" -Eko is a gang leader -Michael dropped his fight in court and let his son grow up without him But none of these characters are "evil" (though Benjamin crosses that line very often. lol). These characters are flawed and have the chance to change for the better (which attracted Jacob's attention).

Part 3 FINAL THING. Sorry for the long replies. But if you watch season 5 episode 4, you will hear Desmond say something very important to Jack. He lets Jack know that they're all playing a game and the main characters are just the pieces. And he's right The war between Ben vs Widmore isn't a right or wrong situation. Neither is Locke vs Jack. Neither is Jacob vs The Man In Black. It's all just people with agendas and the main character fall on either side depending on our interests. That's one of the things that separate Lost from other tv shows. Life isn't black and white. It's complex-and lost handles those complexities
