A thing to note to try to make "sense" of things. Remember that the Smoke Monster confronted Locke first way back in season 1 and did not kill him, but instead killed the boar Locke, Michael and Kate were chasing for him. Then in season 2 the monster confronts Eko the first time and backs off as well. It then appears to him repeatedly as Eko's brother Yemi, trying to mess with his head, and finally trying to get him to confess and feel guilt-ridden about his sinful life, like the monster was trying to subjugate him and make him feel like Eko had to atone. Instead, Eko tells him off basically, and owns up to his life and the reasons he had to do what he did, becoming "evil" to spare his brother from that horrible fate, ironically becoming evil out of love for his young brother. But the monster then seems disappointed that Eko did not bow down, that he did not confess, knowing Eko could not be manipulated the same way Locke could be. They even tell us in that flashback on the marijuana compound and the undercover kid hitchhiking Locke picks up- Locke's psychological profile had him as the most "amenable to coercion." Here, Richard is almost manipulated into what Benjamin was manipulated into doing for the sake of the monster - kill Jacob. Same reasons as Eko too, out of guilt for a sin committed out of love.
