$200.00 challenge... Lets says Im financially challenged and am able to save up 50 a month for a "nice sounding rig" and every 200 buxs I purchase a piece..... Ive got a pc with optical out audio. Where do I go from here? You can purchase stuff below 200, but never above. whats the best to get? My $5 patreon doesnt count against the limit....

This will be for my son... so lets try to keep things working. he currently has a lepai amp and a set of old cheap yamaha 2 way speakers on his pc.

Hm, My first upgrade was to a Schiit DAC(The new modi 3 has optical in) so I would start there as it gives you the biggest change for the money, this would give him better sound into a speaker amp, such as the A10 Z reviewed. That would take $170 of the budget, save the $30 for next time or other things. After that I would pick up a set of passive monitors, I currently use and adore the Jamo S803 which I got for $177 from Crutchfield open box with free shipping, but what the A10 will power and whats available at the time will decide this. After that I would suggest getting a Magni, or equivalent, amp and a set of Sennheiser hd58x or the equivalent at the time you get them. So to summarize: First get a new DAC and Speaker amp, I recommend a Schiit Modi 3 and a Loxjie A10 ~$170, $30 saved Next a set of passive speakers, kinda depends on what is "in" at the time and has 4ohm impedance(so you get the full 60WPC of the A10) ~$200 Last a Magni 3 or equivalent $100 amp that has come out between now and then and a set of under $100 headphones(used Sennheiser hd58x will probably be a good idea around when you will buy them) Hope this helps some! (This is just my opinion, don't be afraid to pick other things that are highly praised by Z or anyone that fit the budget)

Instead of burning cash on the A10, and then again on the Magni, Emotiva Bas-x A100 would be a better route IMO. You get a fanstasic speaker amp that can also blow up your headphones if you choose to insert the headphone jumpers.
