I am considering this sub kit. It seems you like the sub other than you seem to prefer factory built subs which I presume is because they are well done and already made. I was considering subs from HSU, PSA, Klipsch and SVS but am leaning towards this kit. Thoughts on my other options in comparison to this DIY kit from PE?

Well once you factor the amp into it. The cost savings isn't THAT great. So if you want a project (and the finishing is the hardest part) then this is fine. But for a bit more you get a warranty and similar performance. BUT Svs doesn't sell a 15" sealed so a 13" would be the closest comparison.

Thanks Zeos. Good points Of the brands out there which are quiet a few do you find one brand that you think is best bang for buck?

I mean Dayton comes as the cheapest you can get and still guarentee the boom. BIC america and Klipsch can have really good stuff IF you know which are good and which a rip. Then the specialty brands like PSA and Rythmik and SVS that you spend $1000 on a sub.

Good points ZP. I think I am going Dayton because one, I have the equipment and patience to build their subs. The cost of their external amp or using an amp like you did on your sound demo seems to work quiet well and the cost of two of their 12" kits with an amp is about $700. It seems you really like not having a built in plate amp with DSP with your build and I am thinking of going the same route. I have a question regarding size. For a room 17 x 30 with vaulted ceilings would you stay with duel 12" no ported? Or go big and get ports as well?

Go big for home theater. Your room is BIG and the vaulted ceilings are a killer. More always more in your situation and please do the sub crawl. So ported and separate boxes. Dual subs work best.

Re-thinking this again. Ordered a pair of Ohm 3000's now looking for a sub that works well with these. DIY or Manufacture? Looking at SVS SB 4000, if it was your choice money aside what would you recommend?

using the Pump-12 and their shallow 12 inch, you could potentially build one for half the price of the Dayton, at 1/3 the size, and I have to believe the weight as well, just wonder how it sounds.

Vinyl wrap works great if you can't paint or veneer. I doubt you've got room in that enclosure to fit the pump. The speaker itself takes up more than half and the bracing takes up the rest.

I wondered about that, the bracing for the box is very large, I don't see how you could get a large enough plate amp on it to power it to these levels, let alone this pump. I am looking at building the pump as Earthquake has it, in a slim box, no bracing, with a slim 12 inch sub bolted to one side.

I think people have got the plate amp to work with this kit since it's such a popular item on Parts Express. Although the Crown amp might be an easier option at roughly the same price as big plate amp.

I may have to chop a good bit of the bracing inside to get it to work. I will pop the driver out and see what has to go. I'd probably re-brace differently in that case.

Sounds like a challenge (in a good way.) I'm interested to see what happens. That pump will likely put the bass into ludicrous territory!
