Always VPN at Starbucks. I never surf in the clear while I'm in public. Also, Get yourself a good router like a WRT, Nighthawk, or nearly anything from Ubiquiti and never rely on ISPs and their crappy built-by-the-lowest-bidder combo modem-gateway-WiFi thingamajigs. The best thing to do is always to ask for full bridged mode passthrough and run your own firewall/VPN router/WiFi AP that you completely control. When you move to a new location, all you need to do is update the WAN connection details, and leave the rest of the network intact, the way it was. I know it's the "privacy nerd" in me, but I don't want my ISP filtering, blocking, or monitoring my traffic any more than necessary. If I can't get a public IP address in the clear, then I don't want your service. And what's happening on MY side of the firewall is none of their bloody business, which is THE POINT of a firewall! Too many ISPs overextend themselves and think that they're more than the simple utility that they are. They should be no more involved in your business than the water or electric company, selling a metered (or unlimited) service. It's none of their business what I use their service for, be it using power to run a TV vs. a hair dryer, or filling a bathtub vs. my cat's water bowl. {/tinfoilhat}
