How do you go about adding colors? Do you desaturate the colors as they move towards the shadows, focus mainly on hue shifts or...?

I usually make a separate layer and I paint the character, while doing different shades in places where the skin should be warmer or colder. And then I combine it with a layer of shadows. A layer with shadows usually go on top of the color, with the effect of overlay.
