“The Lord Lieutenant was most pleased that I had accepted her assignment. The locals had been growing increasingly restless, and it was becoming more and more difficult to quell their anxiety.

For some time now, traveling seafarers made no mention of encounters with aquatic creatures that bore a disturbing, loose, scaly resemblance to ourselves. While this might seem like a blessing, it had also been accompanied by a rise in missing ships and stories of all hands lost.

If the fishfolk were indeed missing, then it was possible that they had abandoned their sacred purpose in suppressing the leviathan.

The ancient texts spoke of artifacts, stone slabs displaying the warped hieroglyphs holding the knowledge of the scaled society, within the crushing deep of the Great Abyssal Trench. I knew I must take care. The beast always remains near, and this time, untended, it had shifted its temperament.

I set sail for the Great Abyssal Trench, determined to learn the fate of the fishfolk or artifacts that might shed light on the nature of the beast and the ceremonies performed. Every night thus far had been plagued with glimpses, just out of view from the corner of the eye. Wandering thoughts of giant tendrils that may be too easily mistaken as waves in a passing glance haunted my every sleepless night. When sleep found me, the dreams of its sheer size in proportion to myself caused my every waking moment after to be suffocated in insignificance. I feared I might not return.”
