Morel mushrooms are a culinary delicacy and are quite expensive to buy because they are hard to find! But you just gotta be patient and know where to look! (We were lucky to find these so early in the season but we really know where to look!)

Morels are a spring time mushroom and will be especially prevalent in areas that had been burned in the past few years! Once the days have heated back up to 50 degrees and not freezing overnight they’ll be popping up! They love flood plains, south facing hills and sunnier spots in the beginning and moving to the shade layer in the season. They also grow around elm and cotton wood trees. Elevation areas of around 700 to 4000 feet. So once you have all this info you can have fun on google maps just kind of scoping your area! Don’t be afraid to drive on some dirt forest roads!

The thing is with mushroom hunting you HAVE to be patient, we walked for an HOUR before finding one! They are so so hard to spot with their intense camouflage! But once you see one your brain sort of gets the hang of it and you start to find more!

It’s super satisfying to be able to find them! It’s like hunting for treasure!

We will be cooking these a variety or ways but you can also dry these for later use!

Always of course be super cautious while hunting mushrooms for you first time and do your research! You don’t want to be mixing up your mushies! If you are interested Facebook has fun mushroom identification groups you can send your pics to if you are unsure and they love to talk about mushroom growing updates!
