I've never been able to go to a renaissance fair, but a couple of friends and I are planning to go to one next year. Are renaissance fairs overwhelming? And do you have any tips to help with that if they are?

Makeup tips? And other than donations, how do you pay for expenses?

Ive always wanted to go to a renaissance fair, but I want to go in full cosplay. Ive heard people can get real snobby if you do act the part or have the accent of the period clothes you are wearing (example: if dressed in Italian renaissance clothes must talk with Italian accent of know the language) not sure how true that is. Also what is generally allowed as far as armor / weapons / gear?

I've been to renaissance before and I've always wondered, is is a strict thing to go in age appropriate cosplay? I went as edward kenway and passed the first year then wanted to go as my OC character. A steam punk ish type character. Does it matter or more so at renaissance fairs?

Firstly for makeup up tips I have a really super comprehensive video up on my YouTube! Goes over contacts and bruises and masculine vs feminine makeup

Personally I’ve found ren fairies to be less overwhelming that conventions! I think personally because they outside and cons aren’t so I feel a little bit more free space wise! But with any festival gathering type thing there are lots of people but there are always spaces that you can just find that are more quiet to just sit and maybe drink something and regain energy. I’ve found when I get overwhelmed it’s just time for me to sit and probably eat something and def drink water and just remove myself for a little bit ❤️

Ah I see! I feel like a lot of people have had this concern but I feel that these days ren fairies are becoming more relaxed and welcome and those who are snobby are far and few and honestly just being annoying gatekeepers to people just trying to have fun! I’ve gone in fairy costumes to all ren fairest and people used to tell me that fairies weren’t “Renaissance” but it’s just a fantasy faire and people just love to see the costumes! So if anyone does get snobby with you just know it’s their own personal issues and I can assure you it’s NOT you. And as for weapons every faire is different I feel it’s more relaxed that conventions? I think they are more welcome to real swords and stuff because of it being accurate and also because they sell real swords on sight but it just might have to be peace hinder it certain areas walking around

I feel like when ren fairies first started there was this type of gatekeeping that happened and people were unwelcoming of anyone who wasn’t in period accurate clothing but now I now i my faire there are actually themed weekends because they are soooo welcoming of all costuming! Like there is a time travel weekend! A pirate weekend, a steampunk weekend etc! Now I feel fairies are much much more welcoming of all costumes! People just want people to engage with the type of vibes of fun and festivity!
